SHAPE TBAG Reviews

Built like a tank, but awkward

I already own the Shape camera bag and ordered this hoping it would make a nice compliment for longer trips where I needed to carry more gear. Much like the camera bag, this roller is heavy and well-built (though mine didn't stand firmly when upright; it rocked a bit as though the leg frame was off). The exterior was the same high-quality canvas as the camera bag, which feels like it will last forever. The interior reminded me of the older Manfrotto rollers. The interior padding is a light grey and plush all the way around, which lets you use the velcro-equipped dividers in just about any configuration that you can imagine. The exterior also has a set of Molle straps, so you can connect accessories from the camera bag (or any pouches equipped with Molle snaps) and a retractable water-bottle pouch. However, the retractable handle is awkward at best. When retracted, it sits under a stiff flap on top of the bag, which I imagine is to make things more comfortable when using as a backpack, but it means that extending the handle to use as a roller is a bit of a pain. Also, the backpack strap system is equally awkward. The backpack straps tuck into a flap on the back of the bag, but it's difficult to get them to slide in properly due to the large clips that connect to D-rings at the bottom when in backpack mode. To add to that, the backpack straps dangle down below the bottom when you set it down, so in order to use it as a roller, you have to disconnect the clips and stuff the straps into the pocket. Also, and this is a minor annoyance, the interior straps for the gear pocket do not extend far enough to be used when the bag is lying flat; they have to be disconnected. If you are accustomed to bags that allow you to prop the top up when laid on their back, you might find this frustrating. In all, I think this bag is just trying to be too many things at once. They could have made an excellent backpack or an excellent roller, but this is just sort of average at each. The components are of excellent quality; it's just not very useful in practice.

Amazing for Airport Travel

I was super hungry for a replacement for my Pelican S115 Sport Elite backpack because I traveled so much with it, but it was always loaded with batteries and heavy on my back. So I wanted basically the same thing but with wheels. I've traveled with this for a bit now and It's super awesome. Almost same amount of space as my old pelican and way more comfortable to wear. I think because of the rigid frame that the hidden, telescoping handle gives it. Some minor negatives: The clear cell phone pocket on top is way too thin to easily get a large phone in and out easily, so it just gets used for bag tags and name labels. It's bulkier than my pelican so with a laptop on the inside, it just barely fits under airline seating. I like the Pelicans laptop storage better, but I understand how there's a trade off for having wheels. When you roll it, the arm straps drag along the ground, so you have to do this wrap around and hook the straps together thing.
