Chrosziel CDM-UNI-Z2 Overview

Add a powerful zoom motor to your shooting package with the Chrosziel Zoomer Universal Servo Drive Motor. Compatible with LANC control so you can use your existing LANC zoom rocker, the Zoomer also interfaces with Sony's FX6, FX9, FS5, and FS7 handgrip controls. The Zoomer mounts by sliding onto a single 15mm rod, and then you swing it into position against your lens and tighten it on the rod to hold it in place.

The motor supports 10 to 20 VDC power, and it comes with a D-Tap to LEMO-type 0B-5 pin connector for powering it via a D-Tap power source, such as a V-mount or Gold mount battery. An included lens gear belt can mount on manual lenses without gear with a diameter of 2.3 to 4.7".

  • The Sony FX6/FX9/FS5/FS7 handgrip zoom rocker direct;y controls the Zoomer servo drive unit
  • Other zoom rockers with LANC protocol are also compatible
  • Control commands are looped through to the camera, including menu, user buttons, focus magnification, and camera run/stop
  • When using a standard LANC zoom rocker or handle with the Sony PXW-FS5, PXW-FS7, and PXW-FS7II, the servo is connected between the handle and the camera via an input and an output jack to receive all zoom control signals
  • For the Sony PXW-FX9 camera, an included Y-cable is used that accepts the Sony multi-connector and connects to both the input jacks of the Zoomer and the camera
  • For the Sony FX6 camera, the included cable connects the 3.5mm connector of the Sony handgrip, the input jack of the Zoomer, and the Sony camera

Utter Garbage, Unusable, Calibration mode attacks if you slow zoom for more than 10 seconds

I desperately wanted to love this Zoom controller but alas it is total trash. What makes it trash? Well for the price you don't even get a small info display to switch zoom programs, calibrate etc. Instead they want you to hold the zoom forward for 10 seconds to calibrate and to turn your heavy camera upside down so you can count blinks on a tiny LED to know which zoom mode you are in. What does this result in? You attempting a slow zoom mid-shoot and having the motor jump into calibration thereby ruining your shot. God forbid you accidentally put it in a different zoom speed mode. You'll be panic googling what the blinking lights mean so you can get back to the mode you want. How do I know? This thing ruined two different moments in a documentary by going into calibration without my consent. For almost $3k Chrosziel could certainly have included a small screen and some buttons and not relied on this insanely dumb method of calibrating. ANY amount of pressure in the forward zoom direction can throw it into cal mode, not just having the rocker all the way forward. So if you think you can outsmart it by only pressing the rocker a little bit, you're in for a surprise. I tried to make this work and really wanted to use my burano handgrip with a non sony zoom but it will take a brand like Tilta to make a useable one (that will probably cost 1/10th the price). Even when it is calibrated and you are in the best mode you can find, the zoom action is weird and delayed. Good luck trying a creep zoom and counting to 10 in your head to avoid ruining your shot! I think Chrosziel is just a failed brand at this point. I've also used their motor for the FR7 and its also hot garbage and costs a ton. Its jerky and calibrates with far too much force. Your tech will have to muscle the motor against the lens while it calibrates otherwise its skip-city. Its also jerky when its setup correctly, so it can only reframe, not zoom smoothly in shot. Somehow they are the only company making these specific products and for these prices they should work well. I was able to return mine to B&H thankfully and learned my lesson with Chrosziel electronics.

Great costumer service & quality

Chrosziel really stands for German quality and costumer service. I had the chance to test this and I can say it's a very strong motor, ideal for crash zooms but also for slow, smooth zooms on cine lenses! It also has a Photolens-Mode but for that it raises the minimum zoom speed. Also you dont need to own a FX6 or any of the other supported Sony cams. Just plug your LANC-Controller into the motor and you can use it with any camera. The Chrosziel Team also was very helpful with any questions I would have and offered great and fast costumer service which is something I value a lot!

No, the LANC cannot be shared with the Chrosziel Zoomer Universal Servo Drive Motor while being occupied by the FX6 handle controller.
