Venus Optics Laowa 9mm T/2.9 Zero-D Reviews

Amazing focal length and depth of field

I've been needing an ultra wide lens for awhile now to shoot more of interior shots, and this one does it! I was worried about the focal length and distortion at first, since people online often recommend around 16mm and saying 9mm will be too wide. But the near zero distortion and at T2.9, you'll capture a lot more and get good depth of field with shots that are cinematic. It also has really good minimal focusing distance (at 4.7″) and almost no focus breathing. I find it great for photography too. It is for s35, but it is wide enough on a full frame. Plus, it is compact and more cost effective than their full frame wide lenses. Pros: 1. Amazing focus breathing 2. Minimal focusing distance (at 4.7″) 3. Near zero distortion 4. Fast aperture at T2.9 5. Compact and solid build Cons: 1. Made for S35

This lens is unique considering the extreme wide focal length. There's noticeable vignetting that's a bit too dark depending on the environment you're shooting in and the look you desire. I'm a fan of this fisheye style with nearly zero distortion. It feels very commercial at the moment and fun to experiment with.

So Zero-D means zero distortion i guess? and this plus the Tstop and angle of view are the differences between 9mm and 7.5mm?
Asked by: Avid
The Zero-D would indicate as the manufacturer states, "close-to-zero distortion". The main differences between the 2 lenses, 9mm (T2.9, 100° Angle of View) and the 7.5mm (T2.1, 110° Angle of View) are the T stops and the angles of view.

Does it work with a generic 4x6 (100mm) square filter holder? If yes, how is the vignetting when using a square filter?
Asked by: Ke
It does work with generic filter holders, but due to variances in design, the amount of vignetting will vary. For instance, if you need to use an adapter or step-up ring, it might be more apparent on the sides. Despite this, with a 113 degree angle, if it does vignette, it should not be very severe.

This lens does not have a whether seal gasket, would that be an issue when using it with the Komodo having in mind that I would not shoot under wet conditions only dry conditions..? Would dust become a problem over time ?
Asked by: Michael
That is correct. I don't believe we sell it but try using the CAP IT! Covers. They are expendable AKS that protect cinema cameras from dust and rain.
