I was just told by Canon Tech support that this is required to make the Speedlite EL-1 copatible with the new Canon EOS R3 camera. Really? Is that true? and WHY? both shoe cold and hot shoe are multi-function connections. Am I missing something here?

Will this fit the Canon HfG20?
Asked by: Joseph
No, the Canon AD-E1 Multi-Function Shoe Adapter (B&H# CAOCSAADE1) is designed for Canon cameras using Canon's new (as of 2021) Multi-Function Shoe. Currently (as of November 2021), that Multi-Function Shoe is only present on the Canon EOS R3 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only) (B&H# CAER3) and the Canon XF605 UHD 4K HDR Pro Camcorder (B&H# CAXF605).

Would this allow me to use the new DM-E1D microphone intended for the R3 on my R5 as though it was an R3? (In other words, it would appear in my R5 menu??)
Asked by: Anonymous
No, the Canon AD-E1 Multi-Function Shoe Adapter (B&H# CAOCSAADE1) is for adapting the soon-to-be-released (in October 2021) Canon Multi-Function Shoe which will be found on the Canon EOS R3 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only) (B&H# CAER3) and the Canon XF605 UHD 4K HDR Pro Camcorder (B&H# CAXF605). The purpose of the Canon AD-E1 Multi-Function Shoe Adapter is to allow that new Multi-Function Shoe on the aforementioned cameras to be used with legacy accessories (e.g. the 600 EX II Speedlite) while maintaining the weather resistance of the Multi-Function hot shoe on the EOS R3 and XF605. Your Canon EOS R5 Mirrorless Digital Camera (Body Only) (B&H# CAER5) has the legacy type of hot shoe, so it's not designed to take the Canon AD-E1 Multi-Function Shoe Adapter. Even if the adapter were fitted to the legacy hot shoe of an EOS R5 or R6, for example, new accessories requiring the new Multi-Function hot shoe will not function as intended in it.

Does this item merely add weather resistance or is it essential for the electrical connectivity of legacy accessories?
Asked by: Arthur
It will add weather resistance. But it is not essential for electrical connectivity of legacy EX and EL speedlites, according to the Canon USA youtube video "Canon EOS R3s New Accessory Shoe with Rudy Winston".

Im trying to mount my Canon Speedlite EL-1 on a bracket just to the side of the camera, Will this adapter shoe work? Im a newbie here. So my EL-1 would connect to this AD-E1 adapter and it will communicate with my camera? Thanks
Asked by: Jimmy
No, the Canon AD-E1 Multi-Function Shoe Adapter is an adapter that allows flashes that do not have a multi-function shoe to fit on to the cameras that do.. It is not for wireless communication.

Do I need this adapter to use my Profoto AirTTL ...

Do I need this adapter to use my Profoto AirTTL Transmitter or will the Profoto Transmitter work directly on the camera as it does with my R5 and R6?
Asked by: Curtis
I purchased the R3 yesterday (thanks B&H for all the help!) and spent hours researching whether this relatively inexpensive adapter is needed to operate all of my Profoto gear that attaches to the hotshoe (new Connect Pro Transmitter, A1, A1X, etc.) There is wildly conflicting information on the internet about this (and in the first two answers to this question below.) Profoto responded to me today with an official answer: not a single Profoto product is water resistant in any way. The Canon shoe connector will not help the Profoto gear in any way and isnt necessary at all to operate. The R3 hotshoe is backwards compatible and will operate perfectly fine without the connector. That said, I can still see the advantages of purchasing this inexpensive connector (even if I dont use my profoto gear in the rain!) (1) it will keep the camera completely water sealed. attaching a speed light or transmitter to the shoe will not prevent liquid, sand, etc from getting into the otherwise totally sealed camera (Canon provides a shoe cover for when nothing is attached to seal the body.) (2) the connector piece will also protect the new additional contacts that are inside the shoe that you are not using with the Profoto gear.
