Great for glasses wearers

I hadn’t heard of Opticron until read Cornell review of birding binoculars this year. The Opticron Oregon was their first choice. I can see why. These binos are bright, clear and have a generous 22 mm of eye relief. Very comfortable, nice viewing experience.

Since I've only had these for about two weeks now, I can't yet attest to their long-term durability and upkeep, however, I'm very impressed so far so I thought I would write a review for prospective buyers. For context, I'm a very amateur birder who's only started using binoculars this year, but I have years of experience in the photography world so I'm very familiar with anything glass/optics/lens related. I was using an old pair of Nikon Venturer II 8x23 binoculars that my family has had for the longest time, so I've honestly been quite spoiled in terms of image quality when it comes to budget glass, since those things are definitely old, but have surprisingly crisp image quality for their size and age. I was a bit nervous to buy new binoculars, especially roof-prism ones (the Venturer IIs are reverse porro), since I really appreciated how good the Nikons were for me. Lo and behold, though, I'm incredibly glad I got these Opticrons over something from Vortex or the like, since I've heard those aren't as high-quality. What really sold me on these was their in-depth review and ranking from the Cornell Lab on budget binoculars. In terms of image quality, I would say these binoculars are very good. The images are incredibly sharp in the center and the rest of the view, only dropping off a little around the edges. I would say there is a bit of pincushion-y focus (I'm forgetting the proper term) where the focus plane isn't perfectly flat, but it's not noticeable enough to impact the viewing in 95% of scenarios, especially for birding. There is a noticeable amount of chromatic aberration, though, which for a pixel-peeper photographer like me can be a little distracting sometimes, but it's really not that bad and only shows up along edges with very distinct changes in contrast (like branches against a bright sky). The color and contrast representation of the overall image is also very true I would say, and allows me to accurately make out small areas of color on birds or feather patterns in low-contrast and/or low-light scenarios. The useability of the binoculars is also a huge plus for me, and I really enjoy carrying these around. My hands are on the smaller side for a tall guy, but I've had zero issues holding and operating these. The focus wheel is really nice, and is similar in quality to the Venturer IIs, if not just a little less precise in my opinion. The Nikon's wheel is sharp but quite light, all while being very precise with nearly no backlash when changing directions. I've noticed the more that I use the Opticrons, there is a very slight amount of backlash, but I'm guessing it's substantially less than what I've heard from other brands in this price range. Precise focusing was a huge criterion for me, so I'm pleased to say that the wheel on these is heavy enough to not get bumped or drift out of focus, but it's still very precise and easy to quickly nail the focus when you need to. I'm also a glasses wearer, so having the well-built twisting eye relief is a nice touch, and it's super easy to quickly extend or retract the eye pieces and have them stay where you left them. The diopter adjustment is also easy to use and stays in place, along with the main hinge for IPD adjustment (that thing hasn't budged since I set it). Lastly, I'd say that the strap it comes with is pretty nice, but could maybe be a bit longer for tall folks like myself, and the objective caps and rain guard are easy to quickly take off and on when needed. Overall, I would highly recommend these Opticron binoculars since they are a great budget option!
