Shure SRH840 Reviews

They Just Fit XL/XXL Heads

Ok, I Need To Start Out With The Fact I Have A Very Large And Abnormal Shaped Head With Skull Deformations From A Genetic Disorder. Baseball Caps Do Not Fit Me Even On The Last Button. Goorin Bros Hats Just Fit Me. The XL Dean The Butcher Is Tight Fitting And My Head Pushes Up Into The Contours Of The Center Top Of The Hat. I Also Have Dumbo Like Ears. Most Headphones Don't Fit Me Just Like Most Hats Don't. The Best Fitting Headphones Are The Sony LE WH-1000XM3 Fit Fantastic And Have Room For Adjustment In Ways Needed, Larger/smaller Both Ways Etc. However The Sound Is More For Enjoyment Rather Than Listening. Corded, Unpowered They Work Great Just For Basic Listening And Avoiding The BT Radiation If That Is One's Concern. Powered, With Ambient Noise Amplified Or Noise Canceling They Are Fantastic, But That Will Influence Critical Sound Listening For Editing. So I Use Them For Study, School, Music Listening. And Point Of Contention On This Between The Sony's And Shure Headphones Is To Filter Out Ambient White Noise From A High Powered Computer Tower Adjacent To Me. The Fan Puts Off A Deadening Drone. The Sony's Do A Great Job Of Filtering Them Out. Yet The Earcups Of The Sony's Filter Out Some Noise, My Microphone Can Pick Up Leaked Noise While Using Them With My Zoom PodTrakP4 When Recording A Podcast/interview. Which Brings Me To The Shure. I Am Test Listening To My Latest Podcast. I Can Pick Up More Anomalies. Sound Is Not What I Would Consider "flat" The Way Its Been Criticized To Have For General Listening. I Have A Very Distinct Voice, Baritone To Bass. Using The Shure SW7B Microphone Picks Up My Voice Beautifully. Out Of The Box Use It Is Great But My Voice Was Even Deeper, So I Adjusted The Rear Switches Accordingly, It Is Now Very Clear And Even Touching On The Tenor End Of The Tone Scale. But These Headphone Are Criticized For Heaving A Bass Fall Off. I Would Not Say These Have That At All, But I Have Not Tested These That Much. Currently I Am On YT Listening To Rob Zombie Living Dead Girl And Dragula. And They Sound Great. I Can't Exactly Hear The Flatness, But The Sound Is Still Clear. And Any "flatness" I Would Consider To Be Them Not Being Biased Towards Treble Or Bass Making For Critical Listening. Testing Them Off This Video Https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIkvQHk_sWM The Bass Is Deep And Warm But Not Like A Dull Thud As Most Other Bass Is. Maybe It Is A Little Light Or Off On The Far End Of The Bass Spectrum As Some Wave Metrics Report Or Indicate. Wow, It Is Very Very Crisp. And Pleasant. But Here Is The Rub. And May Be Attributed To A Number Of Factors. It Seems Weighted In Sound Amplification To The Right Channel. If This Is Not The Case And Where I Would Nod To The Quality Of It, It Would Show A Possible Hearing Loss Off My Left Ear. That They Are That Clear And Good For Sound Is Not Something I Have Heard In Any Other Headphone, Including The Aforementioned Sony. For Build Quality, These Are Very Much L And R Fitting. Some Headphones Can Often Be Reversed But The Rotating Adjustments Favor The Dedicated Use Of L On The Left Ear And R On The Right Ear. The Headphone Cord Is Removeable BUT IS DEDICATED. So Buy A Replacement To Have On Hand. 3rd Parties May Make One But Is Not The Standard 3 .5mm And It Has Little Lock Tabs. Which I Don't Like. That They Remove Is Better Because I Have A Pair Of JBL Cheapies , (with Awesome General Sound Btw) The Cord Is Very And The Cord Is Failing Enough I Am Getting Clicks While Listening. The 840A's Were Chosen For The Larger Ear Cups (which They Could Be Larger And Not As Large As Told By Sales Reps), Better Adjustment And The Clear Monitoring And Mixing Abilities. NOT For General Listening. They Also Have A Removable Connection Cord. Per Reviews They Are Better Reviewed Than The Sony M1, Just Barely. Without Trying On The Sony's But Having Some Experience With The Brand. I May Chose Them. The 75$ Price Difference Was The Deciding Choice. However, Assuming They Have Better Fit For Larger Heads (from Experience Of Several Different Models) I Would Of Probably Chosen The Sony Brand, That Is If I Was Able To Try Them On Side By Side. Not Being Able To Do So, I Gambled On The More Modest Price. I Am Comfortable Keeping Them And If I Choose To Upgrade They Can Be Kept For Guests To Use Or For Back Up. Wearing These Now For About 40 Minutes They Are Super Comfortable. They Are Not Overly Snug But Stay In Place On My Head. They Are Lightweight And Don't Feel Bulky Like The Sony WH-1000s Do. Final Item To Report On Is That The Cord Comes Out Of The Left Ear. I Am Used To It Being Off The Right And Since I Am Right Handed And My Devices Are Typically Off The Right Hand, It Feels Like A Cross Draw. But Sitting Here I Realize That It May Be Better Off The Left Since My Right Hand, Wrist Or Arm Won't Catch As Easily. Now After An Hour Of Writing This And Playing Around With Audio I Absolutely Love These. I Put On My Final Track To Test Dave Brubeck Take 5. Https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmDDOFXSgAs&list=RDvmDDOFXSgAs&start_radio=1 My Word! Perfectly Balanced Left To Right Channel (no Longer Feeling Any Left Channel Loss Like Stating Before), Clear And Well Defined From Treble To Bass. Beside Wanting It To Fit Just Slightly Larger I Now Can't Find That Much Wrong With Them. I Would Consider Them Now So Clear And Well Balanced That If Absolute Critical Listening Is What You Seek, These Will Indicate Any Anomalous Factors That May Need To Be Corrected.

I purchased the headphone for the fantastic fit/comfort and sound. I am using them with my vintage Sansui 9090 receiver. The headphones are simply just what I needed and I fully recommend them.
