Rycote HC-22 Overview

From Manufacturer

The Rycote HC-22 is a shotgun microphone with a 6.3" interference tube that leverages the company's audio expertise to provide a high-performing, all-purpose solution for location recording, TV/film production, and broadcast work. The electret condenser capsule features sophisticated RF shielding to reduce noise and interference, while its hypercardioid polar pattern reliably attenuates off-axis sound to provide crisp, precise speech and dialog that rivals substantially more expensive models.

The HC-22 can handle sound sources at volumes up to 133 dB SPL when operating on full 48V phantom power. The mic can also run on 24V, but with lowered SPL handling capabilities. The mic offers an extremely low self noise of 8.5 dB and a wide frequency response of 50 Hz to 20 kHz. A travel case is included, while a wide variety of Rycote windshields and mounting accessories are available separately.

Rycote HC-22 Reviews

Great live mic for a quiet string instrument

I use the Rycote HC-22 shotgun mic with a Bose L1 Compact loudspeaker for amplifying a relatively quiet string instrument (Guqin) during live performances. Angled appropriately, the HC-22 provides great clarity of the instrument while avoiding feedback from the loudspeaker even at relatively high levels. I've tried other types of mics (e.g., Audio-Technica PRO 44 boundary mic), but get feedback at much lower levels resulting in insufficient amplification for the instrument. The HC-22 solved my problem, and I really prefer the sound of it compared to other shotgun mics (e.g., Sennheiser MKH 416, MKE 600, and others).

Great, Detailed Microphone

Just upgraded from a Rode NTG-1, and having just being able to use this mic on a job, it definitely was worth the jump! It's clean, and articulate, and has a lot of details in the midrange where as compared to cheaper mics you can hear some of those frequencies get smeared around. It's also very loud, a good 5db louder then my NTG-1, but has very little noise. It can really take advantage of nice loud pre-amps. It doesn't have overly pronounced low-end, but it's not thin either. Off-axis rejection is smooth and natural. I would compare this mic outright to a Sanken CS-1E: Clear and critical, but not overly harsh or pointy. That being said, it makes no efforts to gloss over certain sounds, like highly sibilant voices. I don't consider that a flaw, just consider that if you're specifically looking for a mic that tames those frequencies specifically. It doesn't come with a shock mount or foam (which they make up for by including a beautiful and hardy case), which isn't a dealbreaker, just keep in mind that you may have to buy them if you don't have anything that fits outright.
