Visually and sonically precise, the stainless steel Earthworks ETHOS is a broadcast condenser microphone built to impart a competitive, detailed quality to your voice for podcasts, narration, audiobooks, and more, helping it stand out in a world of speech-centric content. Like many mics that made Earthworks a big name, the ETHOS utilizes a small-diaphragm condenser capsule, which allows it to deliver nuanced and accurate vocal recordings with extended highs.
While it is common for broadcast mics to have cardioid polar patterns, the ETHOS features a supercardioid response, enabling more focused capture of your voice with less background noise. The combination of low-noise circuitry and high SPL handling make it a strong performer, even in today's demanding production standards. Whether hung from a boom arm or affixed to a mic stand, the supplied mount from Triad-Orbit lets you get optimal and stable mic placement without trouble.
This microphone is part of the B&H Virtual Mic Locker, an online tool to help our valued customers determine the sonic differences between popular microphones for podcasting and voice over work. Each microphone was recorded using a Grace Design M103 preamp into a Presonus Quantum 2626 interface.
Voiced for Your Voice
However your voice sounds, the ETHOS is designed to faithfully capture it. You can be sure that the tone of your podcast, narration, commentary, or audiobook will be unmistakably you.
The Detail of a Condenser
The ETHOS utilizes a small-diaphragm condenser capsule to ensure accuracy and revealing detail across its tonal spectrum.
Extended Bandwidth
With a frequency range of 20 Hz to 30 kHz, the ETHOS enables every element of your voice to be recorded clearly, with no loss of highs or lows.
Focused Pickup
A supercardioid polar pattern allows the ETHOS to pick up primarily what's in front of it (your voice) while rejecting much of the off-axis room reflections and background noise.

For pro podcasts and webinars in a slightly treated room, how would this compare to the RE20 or MKH416 running through a MixPre 3 II as the interface?
Asked by: Allen
The Earthworks ETHOS B Broadcast Condenser Microphone is similar to the Sennheiser MKH 416 Shotgun Microphone in its capsule type and directionality, both being directional condensers. The ETHOS B has off-axis rejection for reducing room noise but is likely more forgiving than the MKH 416 in terms of capturing voice when the head turns. The 416 would require discipline from the user in the sense that they would need to be speaking directly at the microphone for the best pickup. The 416 would also be more optimal at a distance, making staying on-axis a bit more difficult. The Electro-Voice RE20 is a less sensitive, dynamic end address microphone more commonly used in these scenarios. It has a wider, more standard cardioid pickup pattern than the ETHOS B. The ETHOS B is more sensitive than the RE20, but makes up for potential room noise issues with its tight pickup pattern. The ETHOS B also has the widest frequency response of the three microphones.
