Audio-Technica BP899 Overview

The black Audio Technica BP899 is a durable lavalier microphone engineered to be low-profile and visually discreet while providing clear, intelligible speech and vocals for performers, presenters, worship leaders, and instructors. The subminiature size is easy to conceal, while the open-diaphragm design produces a clear, natural sound. An acoustically transparent protective mesh shields the capsule from sweat and moisture, providing reliable performance for film/TV work, theater, and professional events.

The BP899 provides a wide 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency range and this version of the capsule is designed for standard speech and vocals at levels up to 140 dB SPL. The microphone's omnidirectional polar pattern picks up sound from 360° around the capsule, helping to deliver consistent levels, even when the talent turns away from the mic capsule. Frequency caps are supplied to boost the high-end response; the cap also directs sweat and moisture away from the microphone element.

The mic features a 4.6' cable and is available with a variety of connector options to accommodate various wireless transmitters. The BP899 runs on plug-in power and this model features a locking Hirose cH-style connector wired for Audio-Technica transmitters. This configuration also includes the AT8545 adapter module, allowing you to plug the mic into a standard XLR input and power it via 11 to 52V phantom power. Two windscreens, a lapel clip, and a case are also supplied.

Compatible Transmitters and Equipment
  • Audio-Technica: Works with Audio-Technica transmitters equipped with a cH-style 4-pin Hirose connector, including the 3000 Series (4th generation), 5000 Series (3rd generation), 6000 Series, and future systems.
  • Includes Phantom Power / XLR adapter: This configuration of the BP899 also includes the AT8545 power module, which adapts the mic to connect to standard 3-pin XLR connections and allows it to operate on 11 to 52V phantom power—great for connecting to mixers and PA systems.
Crisp, Natural Sound for Performances, Lectures, and Events
With its wide, linear 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency range and excellent transient response, the BP899 provides accurate and transparent reproduction of speech and vocals. Two frequency caps are included to boost the high-end frequencies, often used if the mic is concealed in clothing.
Normal Headroom for Standard Speech and Vocals
This version of the BP899 features a capsule with standard sensitivity, able to handle input levels up to 140 dB without distortion.
Omnidirectional Polar Pattern
The forgiving omnidirectional polar pattern picks up sound from all around the mic and provides a consistent frequency response, even for off-axis sound. This helps to supply clear, intelligible speech and vocals, even when the talent isn't speaking directly toward the microphone.
Sweat-Resistant Metal Construction
The unique open-diaphragm mic capsule design is protected from perspiration and moisture by an acoustically transparent mesh. The microphone capsule is housed in a rugged metal structure to shield the electronic circuitry from external electromagnetic noise.
Subminiature Size with a Strong, Flexible Cable
The BP899's subminiature profile enables the microphone to be used on stage or on camera while remaining inconspicuous. The mic can easily be hidden beneath clothing or costumes, while the robust urethane elastomer cable resists abrasion and moisture and provides strength and flexibility.
Includes Two Foam Windscreens and Lapel Clip
Each of the two windscreens features a plastic clasp that helps to secure the screen in place. The lapel clip provides 16 distinct angle adjustments for 360° positioning. A case is also provided.

So far this mic is working great. Good sound with a really cool clip. I like the size and ability to tailor the mic clip to different liturgical vestments.

Does AT still have a power module for this mic that can be powered by AA battery?
Asked by: john
No, the Audio-Technica AT8545 Power Module CH to XLR (B&H # AUAT8545) that is included with the Audio-Technica BP899 Subminiature Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone with Normal Sensitivity, Hirose cH-Style Connector & XLR/Power Module (Black) only works with phantom power. It cannot be used with a AA battery. Unfortunately, Audio-Technica does not offer a CH to XLR power module that operates using a AA battery.
