Sony Xperia PRO-I Overview

This Xperia PRO-I 512GB 5G Smartphone with Vlog Monitor & Grip Kit from B&H includes a Sony Xperia PRO-I 512GB 5G Smartphone, Sony Vlog Monitor for Xperia PRO-I, and Sony GP-VPT2BT Wireless Shooting Grip. This combination gives YouTubers, vloggers, and other pro social content creators a premiere mobile setup right out of the box. The combination lets you shoot your videos with the powerful rear cameras of the PRO-I while properly framing yourself with the 3.5" vlog monitor, and delivering the smooth panning of a handheld grip.

Essentially, vloggers can mount the PRO-I into the included holder with the rear cameras facing them, magnetically attach the vlog monitor to the back, and then attach the whole thing to the handgrip. So instead of using a low-res selfie camera, you get the PRO-I's 24mm wide-angle camera with 1" Exmor RS CMOS sensor and ZEISS Tessar T* aspherical glass lens, which allows for 4K video at 120 fps. In addition to the panning and unique shooting angles the grip offers by default, this particular grip gives you wireless control over shooting, and can even transform into a tabletop tripod for static shots almost anywhere.

B&H's site says, "Properly frame your vlogs with the Sony Vlog Monitor for Xperia PRO-I while utilizing the PRO-I's high-powered wide-angle lens for the best results." Any explanation as to why that advice? One ould think you could better use any of the three lenses with this. Could you explain, in what way using the Vlog Monitor with the 24 or the 50 might be less good? Thanks.
Asked by: Dave
On the Sony Xperia PRO-I Smartphone, the wide angle lens is recommended for use when doing personal vlogging, as the other 2 lenses would, in most cases, be too tight for a shot for someone handholding the camera and filming themselves. With an extended distance between the camera and you, with the use of a tripod or selfie stick, the other lenses could become viable choices.

Obviously this is based on the individual, but I'm wondering if this would be worth it just as a camera device and Wifi (that is, no phone connectivity). Thoughts? Would anyone get it just as a camera?
Asked by: Sam
That's exactly how I'm planning to use it. I tried using it as a phone, and it's horrible for many reasons (see my review). But I do like the SD card slot and 3.5" mm phone jack. Camera is questionable as the 1" sensor isn't really getting used (only a portion of the sensor is used). But I think I will keep it as a multi-media device with somewhat decent camera capability. I'll try using it as a camera monitor for my several Sony Alpha cameras. It's a bit expensive as such a toy, but I can afford it and will probably keep it. As far as the full phone + camera solution, I just purchased Galaxy S22 Ultra.

It seems like the Wireless Grip cannot connect directly to the phone without the Monitor bracket, but you sell the phone +grip as a package. Am I missing something that connects it to the phone alone?
Asked by: Ginessa
You would need the adapter bracket to mount the phone on top. However the wireless functionality would work out of box.
