Key Features
  • Increases Black-and-White Film Contrast
  • Effect Emulates Wratten #16 Filter
  • Darkens Green, Blue, and Violet Tones
  • Lightens Yellow, Orange, and Red Tones
This 49mm #550/040 Orange MRC Basic Filter from B+W can be used to increase image contrast using black-and-white film. When using this filter, green, blue, and violet-colored subjects are reproduced in darker shades of gray than if a filter was not used. Simultaneously, yellow, orange, and red subjects are rendered in lighter shades of gray. Landscape and architectural photos show an increased, almost graphic contrast, while a cloudy sky may already appear dramatic. When shooting landscapes, shades of green foliage can be more differentiated, and this filter can also minimize the haze caused by the bluish cast of daylight. When used for shooting portraits, the appearance of freckles and skin blemishes will be reduced.

B+W MRC Basic filters are made with the exclusive Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) nano premium coating technology. This high-quality broadband coating is applied on both sides and enhances the optical imaging properties, allowing uniform and increased transmittance across the entire light spectrum to be achieved, with minimal physically induced remaining reflection. The nano all-around protection on the filter glass also ensures increased scratch resistance and extremely fast, easy cleaning, providing a long filter life.

I use this filter with my xpan 45mm lens and with my lens hood. it works perfect. Very sharp.

Do not buy if you plan to use your lens hood

I always shoot with the lens hood on to cut down extraneous light. The knurled grip on this filter ring is nice, but B+W made the ring bigger! That makes no sense at all. As a result, lens shades can no longer be put on the lens. I have several M-mount rangefinder lenses made by Leica, Zeiss and Voigtlander, and I tested this filter on each brand. In every case, I could use this filter only if I skipped the hood. What was B+W thinking? I am returning this filter for the B+W 49mm Orange MRC 040M Filter, which I know works. This filter is optically very good and is also much less expensive.
