Synology DS2422+ External HDD/SSD Overview

Designed for small- to medium-sized businesses with large storage, file sharing, and data protection requirements in a multi-user environment, the DiskStation DS2422+ 12-Bay NAS Enclosure from Synology comes with powerful storage management, file syncing, surveillance, and backup software. It is also suitable for editing high-quality video and for VM storage. Powered by Synology's DiskStation Manager (DSM) that includes essential business software solutions, the DS2422+ can be expanded with 12 additional drive bays, or use the PCIe 3.0 x8/x4 slot to install a 10 or 25GbE networking cards or NVMe M.2 SSD.

The DS2422+ is equipped with a 2.2 GHz AMD Ryzen V1500B Quad-Core processor and 4GB of DDR4 ECC memory that can be expanded up to 32GB, while also delivering read speeds of up to 2201 MB/s and write speeds of up to 1383 MB/s. This NAS is equipped with 12 drive bays that are capable of natively supporting 3.5" SATA hard drives, as well as 2.5" SATA hard drives and SSDs for data storage.

The DS2422+ runs on the Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) OS, which is a browser-based operating system which helps to simplify managing your Synology NAS. Also featured are two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports for peripherals and accessories, plus a Mini-SAS expansion port for a DX1222 expansion unit. Network connectivity is achieved via the four Gigabit Ethernet ports. For those who require RAID support, the DS2422+ supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10, as well Synology Hybrid RAID and Basic RAID, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is also available, allowing each drive bay to be individually utilized.

The DS2422+ is engineered to be energy efficient. Not only does it offer two 120 x 120 x 25mm fans to help keep the system running cool always, its noise-dampening design makes for quiet operations. The server supports numerous scheduled power on / off cycles and hard drive hibernation to further minimize power consumption and operation expenses.

The Synology DiskStation DS2422+ 12-Bay NAS Enclosure operates on 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and includes two RJ45 LAN cables, an AC power cord, two hard drive tray keys, and 52 drive screws for 2.5" drives. Protection is provided by a limited 3-year warranty.

The Sales Rep At B&H Suggested We Stay With Synology As Is Was The Premium NAS Box.

Can't justify purchase with hard drive vendor lock-in

I've installed 30 or so Synologys over the years. I used to love them, but since they've made the change to push vendor lock-in with the drives, and then mark their rebranded drives up by 50%, I think I'm going to start looking somewhere else for a NAS. There are a lot of good options out there, and Synology arbitrarily forcing you to use their drives just signals greed and a lack of respect for their customers. So vote with your wallet, and go somewhere else.

The Synology DiskStation DS2422+ 12-Bay NAS Enclosure, B&H # SYDS2422P, can support third-party hard drives, but keep in mind that it's not guaranteed to work 100%, and Synology can deny technical support if you are using drives that are not on their compatibility list.

Will using drives that aren't officially supported void your warranty?
Asked by: Rick
It might not void your warranty, but I know in the past Synology support has used "unverified" hard drives as an excuse to refuse helping with any issues you might have - including data recovery if your unit suffers a volume crash. If any of the drives in your system are unverified (AKA non-Synology brand), they will most likely not help you recover data in the event of a problem. Synology drives are also a lot more expensive, hotter and louder than some other options out there, so being forced to use them is not ideal.
