Hughes & Kettner AmpMan Classic Overview

Great for plugging into a cab, recording direct, or going live into a PA system, the Hughes & Kettner AmpMan Modern is a 50W floorboard-style guitar-amplifier pedal geared towards cleans with more sparkle and full-on, high-gain drive tones. It combines the company's strictly analog Spirit Tone Generator with an innovative Sagging control to deliver authentic tube-like tones at any volume.

The two-channel architecture gives you independent controls on each channel for Volume, Sagging, Presence, Resonance, Tone, and Gain. Four built-in footswitches enable you to select channels, activate Boost, FX loop, Solo functions, and along with a built-in noise gate give you the freedom to ring loud and clear with no menu diving required.

The built-in Red Box AE+ DI provides a balanced XLR output with eight cabinet simulations that achieve miked-cab sounds without a mic or a cab. There is also a separately adjustable stereo headphones output and a stereo auxiliary input. If you wish, AmpMan can even recall your Solo, Boost, and FX Loop settings when you switch channels.

Tonal Freedom with Two Independent Channels
Channel 1 is identical to its counterpart on AmpMan Classic, letting you experience the immediacy and liveliness of single-channel amps with no master. It delivers the iconic tones of the '60s and early '70s, from crystal-clear, sparkling clean sounds to warm, woolly distortion replete with rich overtones. Hit the Boost button, and it pumps out the thrilling sound of a fully cranked tube amp with an upstream booster.

Channel 2 is your stairway to high-gain heaven. Its Tone, Presence, and Resonance knobs cover the spectrum of Metal, from that classic aggressive midrange to modern scooped sounds. Roll back the Sagging knob and the power amp responds ultra fast for tighter tone and hair-trigger response. The tipping point into compression comes very late, even when playing chords in drop tuning. Tapping suddenly seems effortless.

All-Analog Spirit Tone Generator
The Spirit Tone Generator technology faithfully recreates the natural yet wildly dynamic interactions between the single-circuit sections and the amp stages, and the transformers and the speakers found in traditional tube amps. It distills the essence of tube amp physics, with all of the intensity and responsive tonal behavior, into a compact, strictly analog circuit.
Power Amp Sagging Control
Drive a power amp hard enough and it will buckle like a weightlifter under a heavy load. Called sagging, this dip in power supply voltage has a huge impact on tone and feel. The Sagging knob gives you instant access to the sound of a cranked amp on the verge of meltdown. A sensitive tool, this control dials in everything from totally dry to heavily compressed, and all settings in between.
Integrated 50W Ultra-Response Power Amp
The power amp puts out 50W at 4 ohms, 25W at 8 ohms, and 12.5W at 16 ohms. These ratings correspond to those of a tube amp, making the AmpMan a very loud amp capable to rock even a 4×12" speaker cab.
Red Box DI Out with Cab Emulations for Direct Recording
The balanced Red Box DI Out delivers ready-to-go sound straight to the mixing console, powered PA, or DAW, furnishing mic or line levels—with or without cabinet emulation. Use any of the Red Box’s eight cabinet models or send the Spirit Tone generator’s unfiltered, purely analog signal.

Cabinet Types:

  • 1x12" Modern Thiele-Port
  • 2x12" Modern Front-Port
  • 2x12" Vintage Open Back
  • 4x10" Alnico Open Back
  • 4x12" Vintage Cab
  • 4x12" British Cab
  • 4x12" Modern Cab
  • 4x12" American Cab
Practice with Headphone Amp and Aux Input
Equipped with a dedicated volume knob, the built-in headphones amp adds lush simulated stereo to the Red Box signal. The AmpMan blends its signal with the Aux In signal and routes the mix to the Phones output. That's the perfect setup for practicing and jamming with tracks. You can also feed the monitor mix into the Aux In for in-ear monitoring. And the signal patched out via the Phones output works wonderfully with hi-fi systems.
IDB (Intelligent Dual Breakpoint) Noise Gate
The IDB noise gate is a finely tunable tool that cuts noise with awesome precision. This gate gauges levels at the input, but sits behind the preamp, so it is able to respond far more musically.
