Sky-Watcher S11830-1 Reviews
Be Carefull
The Sky-Watcher 14 GOTO collapsible Dobsonian is a very powerful scope. There are a no major issues with the design. But be careful if you want any type of support from the manufacturers. Their customer support does not exist, including any type of help with regards to manuals or instructions on multiple issues starting with assemblage all the way to collimation, alignment, or synscan GOTO usage, software or hardware. You will end up having to watch some very old, low quality videos on youtube, made up by well intended amateur astronomers from a time when cell phones where not popular.
So far, great
Receipt and assembly of my scope were straightforward. It is well-packed and not hard to put together, although I ended up with an extra hand knob, so I worry what I missed! I was surprised that the base is so massive, which is good for stability but not so good for portability. It is nearly impossible for one person to carry the fully assembled mount alone - the limitation is not strength but the physical distance between the two handles. However, the base can be partially disassembled with hand knobs, which is a thoughtful touch. This means I can set up or tear down in just a few minutes with just one person, and it will pack better in the car. Note that the diameter of the base (31 inches) means that it won't fit through many household doors without disassembly anyway. The scope was easy to collimate, as it comes with a center mark on the primary mirror. The alignment and GOTO feature seem to be accurate and easy to work with. I have yet to get a really dark site to see what this scope can do, but so far I am pleased with the optics. There is some coma, not a surprise with a fast scope. Overall my first impressions are great.
