Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reviews

completely manual lens

This lens combo has no electric contacts to the camera. Everything is manual. I expected the manual focus. But not the having to set the camera for aperture or speed control. The automatic settings or programmed settings do not work with this lens. In a way it is fitting that goes with the classic, retro feel of the ZF. The fitting of the extender was different, but once i figured it out it was easy.

Nice for the price, used within its limitations

This lens was $220 at B&H with Nikon F mount, and a separate Tokina Z mount was $30, so with 2 T-mounts it was the same price as with the Z mount only. I have a Nikon D7200 and a Z50, and wanted to try it on both, so bought it. Standard delivery was fast. The first thing I noticed was how small the lens is. The included lens hood doubled it's length. I tried it first on the D7200 and it balanced well. My intention is to use this small light lens hand-held, so I tried it out that way. On the D7200 the screen is dark and difficult to focus, and focus peaking didn't help much. I realized that while this lens is marked f/8, it transmits more like T/11. You need 1/800 or faster handheld on an APS-C camera, so that means ISO 400 at least on a sunny day! I needed ISO 3200 to ISO 6400 on a cloudy day. The biggest challenge is nailing focus, which I was unable to do hand-held. I tried it on a tripod, and better luck but hardly 100%. I would say this lens is UNUSABLE on a DSLR handheld. I switched T-mounts, and on the Z50 it is a different story. Focus is easier, but my hit rate was still about 50% handheld, on fixed or slowly moving subjects. It would be pointless to use on subjects moving rapidly toward or away from me. Image quality is acceptable (on an image in-focus), if you are not a pixel-peeper. I will keep this lens, but may sell it when the novelty wears off.

Is this apse or full frame? Listing says both.
Asked by: Grant
Since it’s a T-mount lens, it will cover the full 35mm frame. But with the proper choice of adapter it will cover any of the (common) smaller sensors such as micro-4/3 and APS-C
