Roland AeroCaster Overview

Get rid of that tangle of video cables and wirelessly stream a multi-camera production with the AeroCaster Livestreaming System from Roland. Combining your iPad (requires iOS 14 or later) with up to four sources (iPhones or Android phones), you can create a professional live-switched streaming program to most popular streaming platforms. Take advantage of the ease of the system to stream multi-camera music performances, online talk shows, or commercial programs.

In addition to the video inputs, the AeroCaster Livestreaming System features a 3-channel mixer to adjust levels from professional audio from dynamic or condenser microphones or instruments via two combo XLR-1/4" jacks and a 3.5mm line-level input. Select from four video inputs as well as the host iPad's camera, creating picture-in-picture effects and split-screen displays.

The System
The AeroCaster system consists of the AeroCaster LIVE app for iPad, the AeroCaster VRC-01 hardware control surface and audio interface, and the AeroCaster Camera app for iOS and Android mobile devices. BYOD screen sharing from computers and mobile devices is also supported.

    Wireless
With all-wireless connectivity, you can use readily available stationary mounts to put the phones in places where it's difficult to use a traditional camera. And with affordable gimbal mounts, you're able to capture stabilized mobile shots from as far as your wireless network will reach.
    Camera Control
Once mobile devices are connected to AeroCaster LIVE, you have remote access to all their advanced camera settings from within the app. Balance and match the image between different phone cameras and control settings like focus, zoom, exposure, white balance, and more.
    Wireless Screen Sharing
AeroCaster Live also provides a simple solution for screen sharing from computers and mobile devices. Presenters can easily connect via the Google Chrome browser over Wi-Fi, with no cables, video adapters, or dongles needed.
    Audio and Video Mixing
The hardware interface handles all your audio input and output needs with the power of a small broadcast mixer. Using simple and straightforward controls, one person can manage video switching and audio mixing—all at once—with no prior production experience required. Monitor your audio mix through headphones or connected monitor speakers, you'll know that your livestream viewers are hearing the content you're delivering.
    Audio Quality
The AeroCaster hardware features two combo XLR-1/4" inputs for connecting microphones, electronic musical instruments, or a live sound console. A wide range of onboard effects allows your talent to sound their best. The headphones jack supports a feed from a headset mic or the mic on your earbuds for a third vocal source, and you can bring in additional audio from a mobile device or music player via the 3.5mm stereo input.
    AeroCaster LIVE App
From within the AeroCaster LIVE app, you have integrated access to media content stored on iCloud Drive. Play your opening theme to start the stream, trigger bumpers between breaks, or simply add some cool background music or sound effects whenever you like.

    Handy little system

I recently purchased AeroCaster VRC-01, and I love it, though there remain several fixes and basic features that are to be desired, which can easily added to the app. 1. One desired feature is the ability to duplicate a scene. This would eliminate the need to recreate each scene and match it to another one when all we need to do is change the camera sources. 2. There's no built-in Lower Thirds feature—title, name, subtitle, logo in one scene—which I find disappointing. I wish there were Chroma Key for Camera inputs, allowing us to create transparent lower thirds even through another computer and OBS. Currently, we can only create non-transparent lower thirds with OBS because the input source of AeroCaster doesn't support transparency. If only we could add multiple text and image layers in one scene, unless I've missed something. 3. Additionally, the consistency of the app and the controller device needs improvement. When controlling the scenes on the device, it always projects it to Program view. I wish it didn't do that, especially when To PGM directly is already toggled OFF. That way, we could still preview it before sending things live. Furthermore, it'd be great if all scenes were toggle-based—being able to click on a scene the second time to return to the original view without the PIP. Currently, we click on a PIP scene, and to remove it, we need to find the camera angle and click on that to exit the PIP. I wish there were Scene-based switching so that we could create just one PIP scene and still be able to switch camera angles. 4. There's a need for more preset scene compositions. I wish there were a Split Screen composition that doesn't crop the aspect ratio of the camera, and the ability to add a background image to it. 5. Additionally, I wish there were a built-in EQ, at least through the app. 6. I wish AeroCaster Live app can launch without the controller (VRC-01), so we can prepare things from anywhere when we didn't bring it with us. Unless every update we do is stored on the device itself. 7. I love the Assignable Deck. But I wish I can replace the built-in BGM, SE 1, & SE 2 also. Just a heads up: Mic 2 doesn't seem to produce phantom power if it's not plugged into the wall. This is something to keep in mind. Initially, I thought I received a defective unit. Also, the package didn't come with a power brick. Despite these points, I love the simplicity and portability of AeroCaster. I can live with the limitations since I can still accomplish many things through another computer. I can project lyrics, slide presentations, and I can even use my mirrorless camera as an input source. 😊

The, Roland AeroCaster Livestreaming System does not offer HDMI output. The IPad that you use to control the switcher is your preview display and controller for the switcher.

What is the transmission range between the phones and the main unit.?
    Asked by: Anonymous
The Roland AeroCaster Livestreaming System (B&H# ROVRC01) uses WiFi for both video and audio transmission between the AeroCaster and the corresponding app which is installed on each mobile device that is providing them. As with any WiFi connection, the effective distance over which data may be transmitted will vary according to the radio frequency environment, placement of both the AeroCaster and mobile device(s), and the strength of the signals. It would be realistic to expect to need to keep the distance to about 30' (9m) or less, and ideally to 20' (6m) or less to ensure an especially stable connection. Moreover, it will be especially helpful to maintain a direct line of sight between each mobile device and the AeroCaster. Please note that since the lion's share of the data will be coming specifically from the mobile device, the most important inherent hardware related limitation will be that of the signal strength of the WiFi radio in the mobile device(s) rather than that of the AeroCaster.

    Asked by: Brian
The Roland AeroCaster Livestreaming System is able to "record program output and independent camera feeds while livestreaming or offline." "Capture the combined program output on the iPad and isolated video feeds on each phone. Then wirelessly transfer the phone videos to the iPad and put all the files together for post-production work in the app of your choice."
