edelkrone FocusONE Overview

The FocusONE v2 Follow Focus Unit from edelkrone is a single rod-based follow focus unit that mounts the marking disk between the handwheel and the drive gear, which provides extremely precise focus marks. The v2 model updates the unit with A/B hard stops for even more precise focus movements. The unit features an industry-standard 0.8 MOD drive gear, and the gearbox has an adjustment screw so you can set the tension and play to fit your comfort level. An industry-standard whip/crank socket allows you to use an available speed crank or focus whip if you desire.

The unit can also adjust to accommodate pulling focus with virtually any diameter lens that you can use with a 15mm or 19mm rod. The unit can easily tilt and adjust with your camera setup, and it can be mounted on either side of the lens. The marking disk faces the operator, giving additional confirmation to the operator that the lens is at the proper mark, and it is also lined up precisely with the focus ring for an accurate focus pull. Adjusting the marking disk is simple to do even without a marker by setting the lens where you want it, rotating the disk to the index mark you wish, and then you can change focus back to the mark you set. The marker disk is made from plastic, and you can place additional index marks on it with available temporary markers of your choice.

edelkrone FocusONE Reviews

Not sure if all of them have the same issues as the one I received...

As they say, I really wanted to like this product. In addition to a wireless follow focus system, I currently own two manual units. One of them is the inexpensive Smallrig, and the other is a mid-range-priced Tilta. When I was first checking the unit out, I thought there might be something I need to loosen, because the two hard stop rings did not turn easily as I would expect. I found that they do turn, but with significant force. This is a problem. For those that have used manual follow focus systems, you would normally use the focus wheel to nail the focus, and then using one finger, move the applicable hard stop into position and tighten it. Then you would do the same with the second hard stop. If the hard stop rings are so tight, you have to fight to turn them, you risk turning the focus wheel from the position it's being held. In addition to this significant problem, sliding the unit onto a 15mm rod was also a struggle as the sleeve was too snug. Lastly, when I tightened the drag on the unit, there was one area that had a couple sluggish points, rather than being smooth with the entire rotation. I didn't expect these problems from this brand. I have since purchased the Smallrig F60. So far, I am very happy with it and the rubber gear covering to use with photography lenses is a great feature, for one.

Phenomenal follow focus, can't believe how inexpensive

I've been on the hunt for a good follow focus, and have been through 3 of them now, and ALMOST pulled the trigger on a Bright Tangerine Revolvr Atom that cost 13x what this edelkrone does. Honestly, I don't agree with the negative reviews here. One, if a single rod follow focus is slipping, tighten it more, clean your rods and the inside mount of the follow focus (could be oily from handling), or switch to a carbon fiber rod that has a bit more texture to it. You can also take a tip from bicycle assembly and use a carbon assembly/friction paste which is literally designed to keep things from slipping in this fashion. A single rod follow focus has a slight tradeoff in overall stability compared to a larger unit that attaches to two rods, but you gain a smaller form factor, lighter weight, and easier positioning. Two, from another review... this unit is not bulky at all. That reviewer suggested spending MORE on a compact unit. From my experience, most of the compact units are cheap and not at all a step up (Tilta and SmallRig included). And generally spending more on a higher-end two-rod follow focus gets you a nice large follow wheel like this edelkrone anyway. A small wheel is harder to turn smoothly and accurately, which is why most cine follow focus have large wheels. The Wooden Camera Zip that I returned had a larger footprint than this edelkrone, and it was a one-rod attachment as well. In terms of quality, I was really really surprised and happy with how nicely built and engineered this edelkrone is. Especially having just returned a $500 Wooden Camera Zip follow focus that was terrible compared to this (plastic, tons of backlash, not worth the price). From that price perspective, this edelkrone could be selling for $1000 easily. All parts are metal and very nicely machined. Everything is adjustable for position and tightness. The hard stop itself is adjustable in position, and the hard stop pins are completely removable (with a storage spot elsewhere on the unit, for safe keeping) and have a rubber o-ring on them for softer bump stops. The adjustable white focus marking disc is a novel approach, with a thin notch cut into it for precise, repeatable marking. Most importantly, there is NO backlash or free play that I can feel. A feat I didn't think I'd hit for less than $1000, let alone $140. I haven't found any downsides yet. Perhaps the fact that there aren't different gear sizes or ratios available? This isn't a big issue for me. Would it be nice? Sure. Would I be willing to give this unit up for something like the Bright Tangerine that performs as good but has gear options... nope.

How many teeth on the gear? Are their alternate gears with different numbers of teeth?
Asked by: Andrew
The edelkrone FocusONE V2 Follow Focus Unit uses cinema‐standard 0.8 mod gearing with 72 teeth. There are alternate gears with different numbers of teeth, like the edelkrone Lens Gear PRO (3-Pack) and other third-party adjustable rings. See: https://bhpho.to/45NEpm4.
