Does the battery in the grip have to be removed before the camera switches over to using the internal battery? I have long periods that I cannot move my camera even enough to remove the battery.
No, the battery does not need to be removed from the OM SYSTEM HLD-10 Power Battery Holder in order for the camera to use the internal battery.

The Olympus HLD-10 does not offer a lug or slot on the right side to accept a hand grip. The Vello Hand Grip Strap with Arca-Style Quick Release Plate can be used, which mounts via the tripod socket on the bottom.

There is no external charging port on the HLD-10.
