Great concept, poor execution, due to bending pins
Unfortunately, though I wanted to love these bulbs, I've now been through three of them, all of which had their pins bend to a nearly or entirely unusable extent, as in bent completely flat. I have a Rifa EX-55 and an EX-88, and have tried these bulbs in both units with the same terrible results. Lowel was nice enough to replace one of the bulbs at no cost, and as soon as I tried inserting the replacement, the same thing happened. I was definitely lining up the notch correctly, pushing it in, and turning it to lock it in correctly, just as I do with the tungsten bulb. Each time I did this, the pins bent. I was sometimes able to bend the pins sort of back into position, but one of the pins was always loose after that, and not stable. It was hit or miss each time I tried to get a bulb to actually power up after I put it back in following the initial bending of pins during insertion of the bulb. It takes way too much force to push these bulbs into the socket enough to lock in with a twist, but at least with the tungstens, the pins don't bend and/or break. Not so with the LEDs. This is a major design flaw with these bulbs. That could easily be remedied with stiff, non-spring-based stronger pins, and so I don't know why Lowel has not done that. VERY dissatisfied and feeling ripped off.
Less enthused than I had hoped
I have been using Lowel Rifa lights since about 2003 - specifically the 44 and 55 - to light hundreds of on-location interviews, so I was very excited to see that Lowel is now producing an LED bulb for the Rifa 55 and higher and I jumped at the chance to get one. But I was much less enthused when I got it. The beauty of the Rifa style light is that it is a small, powerful and simple softbox - but that is no longer the case with this LED replacement bulb. This bulb is HUGE (see my photos) preventing the Rifa to be collapsed fully while the bulb is attached, so it would have to be removed after using it to pack up your lights. Also, the socket attachment is made out of some sort of plastic and the dimmer/color controller switch (also plastic) is attached to the bulb with a very thin and flimsy wire, so I question its road worthiness over time. The bi-color function and the ability to dim the light are both great features, but the diffusion material it comes with is much thinner than the woven glass diffusion of the original Rifa. As for output: the 80 watt LED gives the same 120 reading at 5 feet on my old Sekonic meter as did a 500 watt bulb (both tested with diffusion in place), but due to the thinner diffusion of the LED - to my eye - the LED gives off a harsher light and not the soft and pleasing light which the Rifa is known for. And if you are using the LED bulb on the larger Rifa 66 or 88, you should be aware that your output will now be reduced to that of the Rifa 55, because from my understanding the LED bulbs are all the same at 80 watts and the only thing that is different is the size if the diffusion material. As with most LED systems, the advantages are far less heat and power draw over traditional tungsten bulbs and the ability to dim the light (without color shift) and have bi-color functionality, But the disadvantages are greater size, somewhat lower light quality and questionable build quality. I was going to return the Rifa LED bulb, but I decided to keep it because it is relatively cheap and I may have a use for it at some point. BUT if I could go back in time - I do not think I would get this LED bulb again, because it is just too big and reduces the advantages of the Rifa light. HOWEVER - if you are using a Rifa 55 in a permanent environment like a studio, than this LED bulb would make more sense for you due to the lower heat and power consumption. But for location work, I would stick to the old tungsten bulbs. I hope this review helps.
