Vienna Symphonic Library VSLSYY20S Overview

A subset of the Synchron Percussion III collection, Vienna Symphonic Library Synchron Drums III Standard Library is a virtual instrument with a library that accurately captures the sound of a field drum, marching snare, piccolo snare, snare drum, and a set of boobams with a wide range of articulations for a realistic sound. You also get the powerful drum ensembles of Big Bang Orchestra Dorado, the driving percussion ensemble riffs of Big Bang Orchestra Eridanus, and the unique Drums & Pianos setup of Big Bang Orchestra Fornax (Pitched Percussion Ensembles).

The instruments were masterfully played in Synchron Stage A, Vienna at their designated positions onstage. Engineers employed four separate phase-coherent microphone configurations, recorded simultaneously with every nuanced detail to provide a broad range of room sound options. Using the included Vienna Synchron Player, all mic configurations can be mixed to create stereo mixes, each with different levels of ambience and stereo panorama. This 27.8GB Standard Library comprises more than 53,068 samples.

Solo Instruments
Field Drums
  • Field Drums are snare drums with an especially long corpus and a deeper sound. Their sound resembles that of the Basle drums, which were already in use in the 16th century. The Aural Field Drum used here was played with three different beaters (sticks, hot rods, mallets) all of them with and without snares.
Marching Snares
  • Marching Snares are mainly used in American marching bands. While its shell is normally deeper than that of normal snare drums, its batter heads are made of Kevlar-based fabric, allowing for very high tension. This makes the sound of marching snares (which are also called pipe drums) particularly high, very short, and especially acute.
Piccolo Snares
  • Piccolo Snares have a shallower shell than normal snares, which also makes their timbre higher. The instrument included in Synchron Drums III also has a metal shell to give it extra punch.
Snare Drum Aural Nut
  • The Snare Drum Aural Nut is made of beautiful nutwood and has a wooden frame instead of the more common metal one. For a snare, it sounds surprisingly warm and full.
Boobams
  • Boobams are narrow tube drums with a definite pitch, so that a set of them can be used to play tunes. The word boobam is derived from bamboo, the material from which the instrument was originally made. It was developed by the composer Harry Partch in the middle of the 20th century.

  • Articulations are comprised of single hits on various areas of the drum, rolls, upbeats, coperto (covered with a blanket), played with three different mallets (soft, medium, hard).
  • In addition, there are effect articulations such as brushes, sizzle (attaching a sizzle chain to the skin results in a noisy reverberation), and super ball, which is a rubber ball on a stick that is drawn across the skin, creating a kind of humming tone.
