Apple Mac Studio Reviews

From Too Old To Too New

By James Madison

After I got the Mac Studio, I found out the Thunderbolt ports are Thunderbolt 4. The ports in my MacbookPro are Thunderbolt 2. I had to buy two adapters ($100) but fortunately they work. The adapters are Thunderbolt 3 to 2. There is no 4 to 2. It did come with one Thunderbolt cable which, if you bought one, costs $139. I like the style of pretty much every Apple product I've ever owned. But my gripe is with the changes in the OS. Coming from an old OS, High Sierra to Ventura is pretty much a nightmare. A lot of things won't install because the developers haven't caught up yet. I thought it was coming with Monterey, but no. I had no vote on that. So the Mac Studio is probably the best Mac I've ever had, (except a G4 Tower that had 64 GB of RAM years ago), but I won't be able to see its power until I can get my apps installed and figure out all the differences in the OS. I also got an Apple Studio Display which is just incredible.

Powerful!

This review may be obsolete before it's published. However, here's what I can tell you: I use FCPX to edit mostly 4K 24p and 60p projects. Occasionally, there is 120p at 4K and there is a lot of color grading, effects, etc etc. My Mac Studio has been flawless in processing all of this. the transcoding is blazingly fast, rendering happens quickly and my work flow has been sped up in ways that are meaningful to me and my business. I've not yet touched 8K - so I can't tell you about that. But for my purposes, this is a quick, dependable machine that has significantly improved my editing experience.

this small box is a dream for every digital designer- the speed, the capacity, the power- it is the best tool I have ever had a privilege to use in my life. Also without the financing B&H offered me with PayBoo card I would never had my dream come true.Thank you!

Upgraded to M1 Max w/32 GB and 1 TB from a 2012 Mac Mini Server (4 core intel i7 w/16 GB and 1+2 TB internal SSD). Nice speedups everywhere with more cores, RAM, Thunderbolt, and the 10 Gigabit ethernet (using Zyxel 8+2 port 10G switch). Used mostly for large dataset management & analysis, image processing, 2D/3D graphic design, and editing / print still pictures along with some video. All the Thunderbolt and fast USB3 ports come in handy, especially during initial migration. I used CCC on the old CPU to make a disk image of the old mac for fast transfer on setup. Am using a fast NAS these days in addition to external storage, so the 10G network is great: 900-1200 MB/s sustained transfers. Also considered an M2 pro mac mini but went with the studio due to 2 codecs instead of 1, more USB ports, and a slightly better price. Close call - they're both good.

8K, No Problem

Bought this Mac Studio to replace a 27 inch intel iMac. That iMac struggled with the 8K footage from my Sony A1. On this Mac Studio I played some 8K (520M 4:2:2) footage straight out of camera and I'm so happy that it didn't stutter or freeze up. In FCP I was able to play, edit and work with the footage without transcoding to ProRes. When I did transcode some 8K clips the processing speed was a whole lot quicker than the iMac. And, I have yet to hear the fans while working with this 8K footage. I was worried the M1 Max would still struggle with this 8K footage. 8K, No problem.

Buy a lot of internal memory

I only bought 2 Tb of external memory. I thought I would save money by buying SanDisk 4 TB extreme Pro SSD to keep my photos on. However I have spent at least 80 hours in the last two months trying to get them to consistently work. I have spent about 80 hours on this problem and talked to at least five apple representatives. I wish I spent the extra thousands to get 8 TB of external memory. But that is big bucks.

Boots up quickly and loads programs fast. Migration assistant is a piece of magic and works seamlessly. The Mac Studio hardware works with both Ableton Live and Da Vinci Resolve without a hiccup and the noticeable speed increase is a big boost to my workflow and render output times.

THIS IS ALL YOU NEED, upgraded from Mac Pro 2010

Love the Machine, the look, waited for it a long time, as could not afford the big one, this has ll the connection you need, that really helps to keep thing neat, it would be nice to have another ethernet port but you can use one of the outputs with adapter, this is a specialty request also the ports in the front are super tight so make sure you get your cables in nicely . Now if someone could make a external SSD/SATA enclosure that looks like this with thunderbolt, those owc are black and only have 2 slots

Unfortunately the newer 3K/5K Retina iMac models do support this operation. Target display mode remains the only confirmed method to use an iMac as a computer monitor, and 4K/5K models do not support this function.

Apple does not use regular M.2 storage. The chips in the computer don't have onboard controllers... there are built into the CPU. Even if you were a pro at soldering, 3rd party M2s would fail.
