Desmond DAC-50CAM Reviews

Less Versatile Than Its Sister

I bought this model and the Desmond DAC-50CA in the same order. I wanted to examine the two to determine which I liked better. This clamp came in second. Both allow one to change the orientation of the clamp on a gimbal or pan & tilt head by ninety degrees by locking it into such a clamp. Both have standard Arca Swiss style configurations. (See my detailed discussion in my review of the Desmond DAC-50CA clamp.) The reason I consider this one to be inferior to that other Desmond is that it is less versatile. Because its lower plate has standard Arca Swiss style width in only one of two opposing perpendicular alignments, it is unavailable to sit atop another Arca Swiss type clamp in the same orientation. to improve on its less-than-standard configuration. This deficit can be changed if its bottom plate is first disconnected from the clamp, rotated ninety degrees and then reattached to the upper clamp. However, at that point it would be useless for converting a lens foot orientation into a camera plate one. While this feature might have an arguable benefit for someone with a Manfrotto clamp width matching the alternate plate width, it would be useless for me. (I have two Manfrotto heads, but one is converted to a standard Arca Swiss style clamp; while the other uses hexagonal plates, which lack the alternate width of the bottom plate of this clamp.) Another slight negative of this clamp for me is that it is heavier than its sister, due to the shape and greater thickness of its bottom plate.) Hopefully, a reader of both this review and my one on the DAC-50CA should be able to determine for himself which clamp is better suited to his needs
