SmallHD Cine 18 4K Monitor Overview

Add a professional UHD 4K monitor to your DIT station, video village, or studio with the Cine 18" 4K High-Bright Production Monitor from SmallHD. Featuring the updated SmallHD OS4.1, the monitor provides a crisp 4K image with 3840 x 2160 resolution, 10-bit (8+2 FRC) color intelligence, 1300:1 contrast ratio, and 1100 cd/m² brightness for use outdoors.

The edge-lit display features four 12G/6G/3G/HD-SDI inputs and four 12G/6G/3G/HD-SDI outputs, as well as one HDMI 2.0 input. All functionality of the monitor is accessed via the innovative Page Builder in OS4.1, which features a full-featured UI, preconfigured pages, and page tabs. Other monitoring features include a calibration wizard, false color overlays, waveform, pixel zoom, focus assist, peaking, and improved function buttons.

The monitor can be mounted using the VESA pattern on the back or by 1/4"-20 threads around the top and sides of the monitor. You can power the monitor using a 4-pin XLR input or via a separately available dual V-mount or Gold mount battery plate, and they are hot-swappable. Data inputs and output can be performed using the SD card slot to load 3D LUTs, and the monitor also features an RJ45 Ethernet port and an RJ45 GPI port for additional data and configuration. There is a 3.5mm headphone output to monitor the embedded audio.

I LOVE this monitor. Feedback I received from clients over the years is that they wanted brighter, punchier, more colorful monitors for village. Maybe it’s just the particular clients I work with, but it’s been a recurring theme. This monitor checks all the boxes to make my clients happy. I’m also happy to say that over the years, SmallHD has honed their products to the point where they’re accurate with color display. This monitor feels like a culmination of their efforts on that front. My only knock on it so far is the lack of a screen protector. They used to make one but no longer. Not sure if they’re trying to figure that out still or if I just need to hope people will respect my “Do Not Touch The Screen” stickers I have all over the sides of the monitor. For a while I hesitated on this monitor due to the low rating about warranty, but I spoke with several longer term owners who love their Cine 18s and 24s and haven’t had hardware or warranty issues. I personally can’t speak to longevity as I’ve only had this a few months, but I am loving it so far. Bonus: it has 4 inputs for both SDI and HDMI which eliminates the need for a decimator for up to 4 cams.

The Cine 18 is a super solid purchase for those who need a trustworthy image on set, a deep feature set and the need to view multiple feeds simultaneously. I found the quad split mode absolutely invaluable to 3 camera interview setups, where a quick false color toggle allowed me to make sure the 3 different cameras had matched exposures. The ability to mix the HDMI input with the SDI inputs was particularly helpful, and while the SmallHD OS can be complicated at times, the deep well of features and options come in very handy (image overlay is great for matching frames). In addition, the monitor is lightweight with great mounting options. My only significant complaint is SmallHD no longer sells a clear screen protector, so the monitor is naked on set, which is a recipe for disaster. I ended up getting on custom made by Jim Candreva, which saved the day.

What are the minimum battery specifications to run this monitor? If 2 are attached at the same time with the SmallHD battery plate, does it draw from them in parallel or one at a time?

When using the V-Mount or Gold mount battery plate options from SmallHD. You could work with most any V-Mount or Gold Mount battery produced today. Example battery kits that would work -https://bhpho.to/3AuLwRv Also if a dual plate option is added it would draw from one battery and then the next attached battery.
