Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer GTi Reviews

First time out, I'm impressed

Upgrading from an old MSM unit, this somewhat heftier tracker can handle the weight of my Z8 and 70-180 lens easily, and tracks at that full focal length perfectly. Using my much heavier 180-600 may be a challenge, as it pushes the limits - but does land within the manufacturer's tolerance claim, so I'll try it sometime soon. (I can get M31 at 180mm and have plenty of pixels so cropping isn't a problem, but it'd be nice to point 400mm in that direction...) I definitely recommend getting MSM's laser and their adapter mount for the GTi (and other trackers.) This gets you in the ballpark with Polaris. You might also get a 45 degree optical elbow for the eyepiece, so you can look down instead of climbing under the unit to find Polaris in the reticle and fine tune alignment. (The tripod is sturdy enough, but not terribly tall.) And you'll need to buy a dovetail mount, also, if you don't have one. (My MSM didn't require one.) But after all that, using the app's 2-star alignment and fine-tuning trick from your phone is easy. Then the "go to" function worked perfectly to put M8 in the center of my frame, and also C20. Tracking was spot-on and my star have never looked sharper. I'd love to see a rechargeable battery pack made for this guy - but using standard AA batteries isn't the worst thing. (Better than dragging around a huge battery, like larger units use.) Overall, this is a very good solution for mid-deep sky photography, and excellent for wider views.

Not a Good Purchase

Unfortunately despite viewing several videos reviewing the basic operation and the use of the Sky-Watcher GTi I find this not suitable for first time users with limited astronomy and astrophotography experience. The instructions with the product are not well enough detailed when trouble is experienced in set up. If you live in Idaho you may come across an unboxed but not used Star Tracker GTi for sale along with the hand controller.
