Since I posted that review, I had feedback from Celestron, as follows: Thank you for your notes about the lack of displayed Starsense targets near Dobson's Hole. This has initiated discussions about this with Product Development and they will be contacting the Starsense Explorer app developer, Simulation Curriculum, about ways to have more near-zenith targets appear in the app's lists. I am pleased that your customer interaction with us has initiated improvements in our product. We appreciate it. Celestron Technical Support So I give it one more star.

Major flaws in the software

First, during the ground alignment, use the camera function within the app; not the regular phone camera. Second, the app can guide you to any obhect found it its Tonight list, unless the object is at or above 70 degrees altitude. Then the object disappears from the list. So within a 40 degree wide circle directly overhead near the zenith, you're on your own for finding anything. Of course, this is the darkest area of the sky with the least amount of atmosphere to look through, but with the supplied 25mm eyepiece, the field of view is only about 2/3 of a degree. So unless the object is bright enough to see with the naked eye, using the red dot finder to aim the scope, you're out of luck in this area. Attached is a screenshot from Stellarium with notes illustrating the problem. This has been checked with an Android and an iPhone; the problem is in both apps. The StarSense software needs to be re-written to cover the sky near the zenith.
