Platypod 1024 Overview

The Platypod Disc is a compact accessory for the Platypod Max, Ultra, and eXtreme camera supports. It's also an Arca-type mounting plate that can be used with Arca-compatible ball heads such as the Platypod Elite and Ergo. (It's actually included with the Elite and Ergo heads.)

Featuring a bubble level, the Platypod Disc can simply be attached to the Platypod Max, Ultra, or eXtreme to help level them. Or it can be used to convert the 3/8"-16 screw on the top of these plates to 1/4"-20. It has a 3/8"-16 female thread on the bottom and 1/4"-20 male on top to allow the conversion. The conversion enables you to mount a camera or other 1/4"-20 devices to the top of the Max, Ultra, or eXtreme camera supports.

Besides the 3/8"-16 thread on the bottom, the Platypod Disc has an Arca-type dovetail on the bottom. But the dovetail has a different design than standard Arca dovetails. It's round, but it fits in Arca clamps the same as a standard Arca dovetail does. But the round design allows you to rotate the disc within the clamp before securing it.

The Platypod Disc is made of aluminum and has a compact 2" diameter.

Why?

The Platypod Platypod Disc kind of does what it is advertised to do, but once attached to something like the bottom of a camera you cannot see the bubble level, and it’s round shape does not always feel or seam secure on some Arca Swiss bases. I also question Platypod’s not detailing that the Platypod Platyball Elite Ball Head I purchased at the same time included a Platypod Platypod disk, and I could have saved the $13.

Ridiculously large diameter, heavy

This needs a complete redesign.. The Arca fit bottom round plate is fine, works well. The upper part of the disc is of a stupidly large diameter and makes heavier whatever lightweight Platypod, or anything, it is mounted to ...It needs to be the same 1 1/2 diameter as the bottom, and have a knurled grip edge ..The spirit level is completely unnecessary, as almost all cameras have a leveling feature , and many heads have a spirit level, which is the only thing that may need to show level, because it is the last variable that a camera sits atop, and that same head will cover over the spirit level on the disc. Also, please include a 3/8 to 1/4 reducer, which costs pennies, and is a life saver for some applications, like just using the disc atop a tripod, or other mount, having a 1/4 stud.
