United Studio Technologies UT FET47 Overview

The UT FET47 Large-Diaphragm FET Condenser Microphone by United Studio Technologies is a painstaking recreation of a beloved German classic. Based on the original, highly sought-after U47 FET, the UT FET47 brings all of the versatility, wide open clarity, and depth of sound of the original without the vintage price tag. United Studio Technologies partnered with acclaimed capsule designer Eric Heiserman to bring the German K47 capsule back to life in a way that captures all of the big sound of the original without excessive harshness or sibilance.

The capsules are handmade in small batches in the US and tested prior to the final microphone build. Incredibly high SPL resiliency and an onboard -10 dB pad allow the mic to be used on nearly any instrument or application, especially its classic use as a kick drum mic. A switchable high-pass filter gives plenty of flexibility when used as a vocal mic or when recording brass, woodwinds, and guitar. A transformer built by California-based Cinemag Transformers delivers clean and quiet operation. The UT FET47 offers extraordinary, consistent sound quality that only an uncompromising design can bring, all at an accessible price.

Heiserman-Designed HZ-Series Capsule
United Studio Technologies has worked closely with acclaimed capsule designer Eric Heiserman to produce a modern take on the classic K47 German capsule design. Featuring sourced Mylar and dual, matched backplates, the HZ-Series capsules possess consistent and accurate sound quality from side to side and a wide open, highly three-dimensional sound. Only a few capsules are manufactured at a time, and undergo strict testing and listening.
Custom Cinemag Transformer
UT sought numerous recreations of the original German transformer but ultimately settled on an exceptional offering from California based Cinemag Transformers. It is a large, heavy transformer made from a 'striped core' of interleaved high nickel and steel laminations, wound to the specs of the original. The core utilizes a humbucking design, ensuring clean, quiet operation.
Exceptional Build Quality
No attention to detail was spared in this loving recreation of a classic and the UT FET47 is handmade in the USA by actual recording engineers. The body is constructed from electroplated Nickel and solid milled brass, the connector is 24k gold plated, and the capsule is top-of-the-line with 34mm all-brass and a diaphragm made of 24k gold sputtered Mylar (PET film).
More Flexible than Meets the Eye
While the original U47 FET became beloved for its use as a bass drum microphone, this recreation by UT has all those same strengths but even more flexibility thanks to its clever design. High pressure levels still allow the UT FET47 to be used for drums, aided by the convenient -10 dB pad, but also features a switch-activated, high-pass filter at 75 Hz, allowing it to be more viable as a general instrument mic and especially as a vocal mic. UT designed this microphone to be a versatile studio workhorse and it shows.
Vintage Where It Counts, Modern Where It's Needed
The UT FET47 features laboriously sourced NOS (new old stock) FETs for just the right time-honored sound. True vintage polystyrene capacitors further aid in producing a microphone that perfectly recreates one of the most beloved classic early solid-state condenser mics for the modern recordist.
