Venus Optics Laowa Nanomorph 27mm T2.8 1.5x S35 Anamorphic Lens (DJI DL, Amber Flare)

This Laowa Nanomorph 27mm T2.8 1.5x S35 Anamorphic Lens from Venus Optics is a slender, compact anamorphic lens that captures high-definition video with 1.5x anamorphic squeeze on cameras with S35 sensors. It features a focal length of 27mm, a DJI DL lens mount, an aperture range of T2.8 to T22 for a deep depth of field, and 13 iris blades for a shallow depth of field and soft bokeh.

The prime lens has a very short minimum focus distance of 16.9" and offers anamorphic qualities such as high contrast, amber color lens flares, and a 70.8° horizontal field of view. Other features include measurement markings in feet and meters, 0.8 MOD cine gears on focus and aperture rings, and a 55mm front filter thread. The DJI DL lens mount is interchangeable and can be swapped out for an optional mount.

Constant 1.5x Squeeze Ratio
A 1.5x squeeze ratio is a perfect balance between the size and anamorphic intensity. With a 1.5x squeeze ratio, you will have a 2.66:1 on a 16:9 sensor after de-squeeze. There is also room for you to crop into a 2.4:1 widescreen ratio.
Artistic Oval Bokeh
A 1.5x squeeze ratio also renders oval bokeh that gives an artistic touch to the image. It also creates a blurry and creamy background that pops out the subject.
Amber Anamorphic Flare Color
Amber flares are good for narrative and warm vibes and are less common among cine lenses.
Short Focus Distance
The 16.9" close focus distance is short so users can create closer shots. It renders a shallower depth of field, so the sense of compression will be stronger and the bokeh will be more oval-shaped.
Unified Gear Position
The unified gear position allows users to switch lenses quickly and without readjustment on the focus gear.
55mm Filter Thread
A 55mm filter can be attached directly to the lens for a variety of handy setups. The small diameter is favorable when doing run-and-gun shots or utilizing it with an aerial drone.
Dual Scales
Both imperial and metric scales are printed on the lens body.
0.8 MOD Gears
Industry-standard 0.8 MOD gears are installed on both the aperture and focus rings.
Flange Back Adjustment
The lens allows users to adjust the back focus easily.
Venus Optics Laowa Nanomorph 35mm T2.4 1.5x S35 Anamorphic Lens (DJI DL, Amber Flare)

This Laowa Nanomorph 35mm T2.4 1.5x S35 Anamorphic Lens from Venus Optics is a slender, compact anamorphic lens that captures high-definition video with 1.5x anamorphic squeeze on cameras with S35 sensors. It features a focal length of 35mm, a DJI DL lens mount, an aperture range of T2.4 to T22 for a deep depth of field, and 13 iris blades for a shallow depth of field and soft bokeh.

The prime lens has a very short minimum focus distance of 23.6" and offers anamorphic qualities such as high contrast, amber color lens flares, and a 57.5° horizontal field of view. Other features include measurement markings in feet and meters, 0.8 MOD cine gears on focus and aperture rings, and a 55mm front filter thread. Venus Optics Nanomorph Reviews

Great for gentle anamorphic!

I got this compact set for a special production that we're on for two months, and they are perfect for the type of piece we're shooting, namely getting a filmic look but also sharp enough for interviews with two or more people. IE; sharp but characterful, no warping of faces even out of center, but still retaining some anamorphic looks for background and/or light flares etc. When someone says they want anamorphic they might not know how anamorphic they want! These are a nice hint, plus they're safe for those who would otherwise freak out when they see pin cushioning and attributes that most anamorphic lenses are famed for. The flaring is mild and the edges are gently curved but not that much. All in all a well built set, but you may well need the longer 65 and 80 after playing with these, I know I do. Used so far on Red Komodo and GH5/GH5S/GH7 with great success. Will expand this set at the first opportunity. Metal and lightweight enough for run and gun, smooth focusing by hand, but nice long travel for good follow focus when needed. Solid build and petit, really great for travel. Came with 3xEF mounts too, so if you potentially could find an EF adapter with reducer/speed booster [PL protrusion may stick into that so be careful especially the longer 27] it could make even wider for some smaller sensors. Having a 2x MFT sensor cuts down the anamorphic looking edges a little. *Note that the mount flanges on these PL lenses are thicker than some other PL lenses and need a PL mount/adapter that allows for them. IE; SLR Magic MFT mount to PL lens adapters barely fit over the flanges, where as my DZO RF mount to PL lens adapter locks perfectly - so FYI. All in all these are for people who want to flirt with anamorphic a little and not commit to the wild look of a Russian Lomo or blow your mortgage on some Cooke S2s! Having these lenses really allows your producer/director safety, but still get the look and not blow the budget, so 5 stars for Laowa.

In theory the Nanomorphs have a cool and light form factor and sound great; but: - on close-ups can get really weird distortion in the center of the frame esp when there is lines at different levels - there is always strong pin cushion distortion on the sides A person in center frame with landscape far back looks ok. However, if you have objects close at the center with straight lines those get warped. Columns of buildings get warped looking "unreal." Window frames can become curved etc. Definitely not great for real estate or product shots etc Rolling the camera also results in very strange/twisted images. The footage doesn't look like reality. Straight lines can become weirdly curved center frame. Uneasy. This is not normal type of distortion. It's unlike any other lenses we have seen... but in a really bad way. I guess there had to be made some trade-offs to achieve the low weight and small form factor. A lot of footage ends up in the trash. Fun while shooting but afterwards you regret using these lenses and are usually in for a bad surprise when reviewing the footage on a big monitor. Difficult to use for a professional shoot since as soon as the shot doesn't have the building far in the background but rather close (for example to the side), weird things happen. It might work for some shots but severely restrict the shots that work. The distortion made viewers feel like something was broken with the lenses. Sharpness is quite poor. And the anamorphic effect is not very strong. So you mostly just loose image quality. The lenses are very light especially with RF, but they may also make your camera feel a bit unbalanced when shooting handheld. A little heavier would have worked better for a RED Komodo or Canon R5. For anamorphic, get Atlas, Cooke or other professional anamorphic lenses instead. Much better investment. Or buy strong spherical lenses Sigma... easier to add character in post and cheaper too. Big disappointment.

Does the set come with a case?
Asked by: Jared
Yes, they do absolutely come with the case - when you buy the set of 3, the manufacturer ships them in a case to B&H and they in turn send the exact thing to you. I received the 3 lenses with PL mounts installed, the EF mounts and shims, and a case that holds 5 Nanomorph lenses, for when the 65mm and the 80mm release.

Does anyone know if using these lenses with an EF mount in conjunction with the EF to RF adapter on a Red Komodo would cause issues? Interested in using them that way because of the rear ND option.
Asked by: Randy
Actually, no, it doesn't appear they will work with the EF-RF adapter with the drop-in filters. Works fine with any straight EF-RF adapter, but the back element comes up against the drop-in filter in the drop-in filter version

Will the EF version work if I use an EF to Sony E mount adapter on my A7s3?
Asked by: Spencer
Although, an EF to E-mount adapter would work for mounting the Venus Optics Laowa Nanomorph S35 Prime 3-Lens Bundle (ARRI PL & Canon EF, Silver Flare), when equipped with their EF mounts, to a Sony A7S III, these lenses are Super 35mm sensors and for using with the A7S III, you would need to crop the sensor to a 1080p mode to avoid vignetting.
