Venus Optics Laowa Nanomorph 35mm T2.4 1.5x S... Overview

This Laowa Nanomorph 35mm T2.4 1.5x S35 Anamorphic Lens from Venus Optics is a slender, compact anamorphic lens that captures high-definition video with 1.5x anamorphic squeeze on cameras with S35 sensors. It features a focal length of 35mm, a Canon RF lens mount, an aperture range of T2.4 to T22 for a deep depth of field, and 13 iris blades for a shallow depth of field and soft bokeh.

The prime lens has a very short minimum focus distance of 23.6" and offers anamorphic qualities such as high contrast, amber color lens flares, and a 57.5° horizontal field of view. Other features include measurement markings in feet and meters, 0.8 MOD cine gears on focus and aperture rings, and a 55mm front filter thread. The Canon RF lens mount is interchangeable and can be swapped out for an optional mount.

Constant 1.5x Squeeze Ratio
A 1.5x squeeze ratio is a perfect balance between the size and anamorphic intensity. With a 1.5x squeeze ratio, you will have a 2.66:1 on a 16:9 sensor after de-squeeze. There is also room for you to crop into a 2.4:1 widescreen ratio.
Artistic Oval Bokeh
A 1.5x squeeze ratio also renders oval bokeh that gives an artistic touch to the image. It also creates a blurry and creamy background that pops out the subject.
Amber Anamorphic Flare Color
Amber flares are good for narrative and warm vibes and are less common among cine lenses.
Short Focus Distance
The 23.6" close focus distance is short so users can create closer shots. It renders a shallower depth of field, so the sense of compression will be stronger and the bokeh will be more oval-shaped.
Unified Gear Position
The unified gear position allows users to switch lenses quickly and without readjustment on the focus gear.
55mm Filter Thread
A 55mm filter can be attached directly to the lens for a variety of handy setups. The small diameter is favorable when doing run-and-gun shots or utilizing it with an aerial drone.
Dual Scales
Both imperial and metric scales are printed on the lens body.
0.8 MOD Gears
Industry-standard 0.8 MOD gears are installed on both the aperture and focus rings.
Flange Back Adjustment
The lens allows users to adjust the back focus easily.

Be ware, your filter may scratch the lens.

Excellent lens and super light weight and super compact for an anamorphic. I have an APSC Sirui 35mm 1.33X 1.8f Anamorphic and that lens is super front heavy on my Sony FX30. I could not use that setup on my gimbal do to the massive weight of the Sirui. Weight got to be so annoying that when I saw the Nanomnorph I had to get it even though it’s almost twice the price of the Sirui anamorphic. I am suprised how tiny lens is. I also appreciate the built in focus/aperture gears. It’s a cinema lens it should have gears right? With the Sirui they give you slip o plastic gear rings which always seemed like an afterthought to me. Using the PD Movie Air Smart lidar autofocus system which works great with this lens. I have to warn anyone reading this. Be careful what filters you use with this 35mm lens because the lens is almost flush with the housing. If you screw on say an ND filter the filter will touch and may scratch the Nanomorph lens. The Nanomorph on the 35mm has a slight curve so it’s not flush and will hit your filter. That is one bad thing about this lens. I thank myself with being observant and noticed. Measured with a caliper how much space between lens and filter glass and yes the filter glass hits the lens. Could not use a 55mm ND but had to use a 58mm ND with a step up ring to make a gap between the filter and lens. Giving this lens 4 out of 5 only because of that. Don’t know what Laowa was thinking. Other than that beautiful images from this lens.

Very good for independent filmmakers

Great value for the price. The aesthetics of the images achieved are beautiful. It would be nice to have a detailed manufacturer's video of the mount change from PL to EF.

Is the focal length the full-frame equivalent on S35?

The Venus Optics Laowa Nanomorph 35mm T2.4 1.5x S35 Anamorphic Lens (Nikon Z, Silver Flare) would provide a 56mm view on S35 sensors. The lens is not full frame and can not be used with full frame sensors. There is a 1.6x magnification or Crop on S35 sensor sizes. This magnification stays the same if the lens is full frame or S35.

EF version is $500 more than the other versions OR you could get an interchangeable bayonet for $100.Whats the difference?
Asked by: Phil
With the extra cost, you get the high-precision (expensive) PL mount. If you are a user of PL, you understand the cost. Neither of the mounts are $100 adapters.
