LaCie 2big External HDD Overview

If you've been looking for a powerful and versatile Thunderbolt 3 docking station that restores many of the ports and connectivity that have been removed on modern day laptops, take a look at the 16TB 2big Dock 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array from LaCie. The 2big Thunderbolt 3 Dock delivers a storage capacity of 16TB, which is comprised of two 8TB Seagate IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" enterprise-class hard drives. The 2big comes formatted as exFAT, meaning it will work with both Windows and Mac systems right out of the box, and is configured as hardware-controlled RAID 0, which provides performance gains, but no data redundancy. Also supported is RAID 1 and JBOD. Each of the two 3.5" SATA III drive bays are hot-swappable, allowing users to remove and replace failed hard drives.

The back of the 2big is equipped with two 40 Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 ports, which allow you to interface with your host system at speeds up to 550 MB/s. The Thunderbolt 3 interface can also provide up to 45W of power to connected devices and may be used to daisy-chain up to five additional Thunderbolt 3 peripherals, including displays, or one USB-C peripheral. Between the second Thunderbolt 3 port and the DisplayPort 1.4 interface, the 2big supports two 4K displays or one 8K display.

On its front, the 2big has a built-in USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 port, which can charge your USB device or connect a USB drive or digital camera for offloading files. Also available are dedicated CFexpress Type B, CFast 2.0, and UHS-II SDXC card slots, allowing you to directly download content from your drone, DSLR, GoPro, and more. This dock can store hundreds of hours of 4K footage and hundreds of thousands of raw images.

The LaCie 2big Thunderbolt 3 Dock includes a Thunderbolt 3 cable and an external power supply. Protection is provided by a limited 5-year warranty.

Please note that Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 are only supported when Apple's Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter is used with systems running macOS 10.12 Sierra or later. Also, the CFexpress Type B reader doesn't work with XQD media.

LaCie 2big External HDD Reviews

Truly Awful - Just Sad

I was really hoping I could use this as an alternative to the DROBO I had been using for years, but not even close (though I know it's not a clear comparison). The first drive malfunctioned so severely I had to send it back for a replacement and the new drive has the same issues, constantly unmounting and having horrible problems simply accessing the files with any kind of speed. I can't actually work from this drive it is so slow and unreliable so I just use it for storage. I've just decided to get something else as I'm worried about eventual failure. Very costly. So disappointing as I've been a longtime LaCie fan. I wish I had seen all of these more recent reviews before I made the purchase about a year ago.

Failed in few months

Product hardware failed in few months and the main mother board chassis damaged the drives. I am unable to recover my data even after setting this for RAID 1. Poor support and I will have to physically carry the drives to USA for any warranty. No Global support

Can i daisy-chain with older 2big dock?
Asked by: Nelson
It is possible to daisy chain the LaCie 16TB 2big Dock 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array (Black), B&H # LASTLG160004, with an older LaCie 2big Dock as long as it has Thunderbolt 3 or newer. If it has only USB, it is also possible to daisy chain, but it would need to be the last device on the chain.

Anyone happens to know how to configure the dock ...

Anyone happens to know how to configure the dock so it doesn't constantly power the external hard drive (LaCie d2 in my case) plugged into its front USB port when the computer is off? With my iMac shut off, my d2 stays on, although the front led is not lit as you can physically feel the drive spinning and the enclosure is warm to the touch. I couldn't find this in LaCie's literature or anywhere online.
Asked by: Filip
Unfortunately the USB port on the front of the LaCie 16TB 2big Dock 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array is a pass-through connection directly to your computer, but power for the port comes from the LaCie 2big's power supply. As such, any drives connected to this port will be receiving power as long as this power supply is connected.

The LaCie 48TB 2big Dock 2-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array requires a Thunderbolt 3 connection to the host computer. A regular USB connection will not work.
