The 1/2-grade, 39mm Tiffen Black Pro-Mist Filter helps to reduce the value of the highlights while slightly lowering the overall contrast. This filter is especially useful for smoothing out and softening facial wrinkles and other blemishes. While designed for use with movies, this filter can also be used for fashion and beauty applications. Unlike a traditional diffusion or soft focus filter, Pro-Mist filters provide little loss of detail across the image. The 1/2 density provides more contrast and highlight reduction than the 1/4, but less than the 1, while still allowing for a soft, pastel-like quality of light.

Tiffen Black Pro-Mist Reviews
Great filter
Uses it on a sunset hike. Adds a nice soft bloom to shots facing into the sun. Good build quality. My only complaint I wish all filter makers would provide a soft punch for the filter as it’s more practical than the larger hard plastic case.
Great filter that creates a dreamy, surreal look to images.
I read reviews about the 1/4 and 1/2 and lower strengths having subtle effects that looked nice. I wanted a really surreal effect so I purchased a Grade 1 Black Pro-Mist. It diffuses the light and creates a halation type effect on highlights but also across the the image it softens everything. You can still see detail, but it is softer. The Grade 1 has a pronounced effect, but it is still not outlandish. You can expect your histogram to look like the lowest 1/3 of black tones removed and the highest 1/3 of whites removed and most tones in the middle gray area. (Depends on your exposure). But if you need more contrast, you can simply use a levels adjustment to get deep blacks and whites and your image will have an image that looks like its had a gaussian blur and overlay or soft light blend mode. Very rich tones and dreamy look. Or you can leave the histogram like it is and you have a very soft contrast image with a soft haze over it. I am going to explore white mist filters as they are supposed to have a more pronounced halation around white highlights. The Black Pro Mist is outstanding and I already purchased a Grade 3 to see the effect it creates.
