SWAROVSKI OPTIK 17-40x56 Spotting Scope Reviews
works fine in bright conditions
I had been looking for a smaller spotting scope for use in the back country while big game hunting. I have swarovski nl pure binos that I really like so I gave the STC serious consideration. it is light, compact, and decent glass but not as good as the NL pure 10x42 binos. The focus is very smooth as is the power selection. I added the Hoya NXT objective lens filter to protect the objective lens. Unfortunately the lens cover that comes with the scope does not attach reliably and can easily fall off. I have to pay very close attention to the connection and test it. Without the filter the cover works fine. The half shell seemed like a great feature as there is no doubt I will use this scope by resting it on my pack or shooting sticks. The problem encountered after reading the manual for mounting the half shell, the "supplied" O-ring and screw were not in the box! I contacted B and H by chat and was advised that they would have Swarovski sent the parts directly to me. After a few days of not getting any updates I contacted Swarovski directly and worked with their customer service. Their product parts manual for the STC spotting scope is different than what comes in the box and I was asked to email a copy of what I had so they could Identify the missing parts. I received an email advising the parts would be shipped soon. My concern is what they are sending ...it shows o-rings and nothing about the screw. Guess I'll find out after xmas when it is due to arrive. the scope does take some time to get used to. Adjusting the eye piece is probably the trickiest part but when it is set up it works fine. Not so much when wearing glasses. Early morning light and dusk light viewing is a bit dissapointing and viewing is best at lower power. Daylight and bright days the scope is clear and edge to edge clarity is exceptional. it is an expensive piece of equipment and I hope the correct parts arrive to mount the half shell.
Outstanding travel scope
Ordered this from B&H as a gift for my wife who is an avid birder. She already had the Kowa TSN-553 which has been considered the best small scope, and which she liked very much. I set them both up on our deck and told her to try them side by side and if she didn't prefer the Swarovski, I would send it back. Well we still have the Swarovski, and Kowa hasn't been used since. The thing that sold her (and me) on the Swaro is the expansive field of view compared to the Kowa. A bigger brighter view. The Kowa has a little more magnification - a 45 vs 40 on the Swaro, but really has tunnel vision when compared with the Swarovski. We have let other birders try it in the field and the typical response is- they can't believe how good the view is from such a small scope and they want one. It definitely punches above it's weight. I gave it four stars instead of five because of the base plate which connects to your tripod head. It is a small round disk of very smooth metal which could not be made secure to the mounting plate of the the four different heads and five different plates I tried it on. When I picked the tripod up and put it over my shoulder, the scope would pivot from it's own weight. No matter how tight I turned it, and I eventually broke the 3/8 to 1/4 reducer insert (which came with the scope) by tightening it too much. The fix (after a number of failures) was the Manfrotto 088LBP Female 1/4-20 to Male 3/8 Thread Adapter. B&H sells this part. Swarovski, fix this design flaw in an otherwise excellent scope.
