AJA ColorBox Overview

Built for broadcast applications, the AJA ColorBox HDR/SDR Color Converter is an SDR/HDR/WCG signal-supporting device capable of managing color-driven workflows for consistent conversion across live programs. One 12G-SDI input delivers up to UHD 4K video to two 12G-SDI outputs or one HDMI 2.0 output for high-quality video. The ColorBox can also support up to 16-bit TIFF images. Outfitted with 3D LUT processing with support for 1D LUTs and 3x3 matrices, the ColorBox offers user-configurable color control using industry-standard file types.

Five processing pipeline modes, including two licensable upgrade options, are available for the ColorBox: AJA Color, Colorfront, NBCU LUTs, ORION-CONVERT, and BBC HLG LUT. Advanced setting control for the device can be achieved via the web user interface using the Gigabit Ethernet port. A mini-USB port on the front panel can connect a third-party controller and configure the device's initial IP address. Included with the ColorBox is an AC power adapter for integration into your preexisting broadcast configuration.

Features at a Glance
  • Ultralow latency, less than half a video line
  • Seven LUT nodes plus overlay: one 3D LUT processor, four 1D LUT processors, two 3x3 matric processors

  • Configure IP address via mini-USB port and set up software for both Windows and macOS
Integration Across Applications
  • UHD 4K SDR and HDR pipelines for live television and converts. OB trucks and other live event teams can use ColorBox signals and convert SDR to HDR and HDR to other delivery formats. Licensable Colorfront, ORION, CONVERT< and BBC HLG LUT options, as well as built-in Colorfront transforms, ACEs, and NBCU LUTS, prove tools to manage HDR workflows. For hardware control, SKAARHOJ and CyanView have integrated native control of the ColorBox.
  • A DIT can manage workflows to load multiple looks, make adjustments, and save reference images for dailies, post-production, and other uses. Pomfort Livegrade Pro and Studio, Assimilate Live Looks, and Live Assist, as well as QTAKE Video Assist software, integrate easily with native control. Full-frame processing eliminates partial LUT processing.
  • Colorbox features extensive API that allows third parties to control the Frame Store and output 12-bit RGB test patches for monitor calibration.
Image Processing Pipelines
ColorBox features a range of image pipelines to choose from, depending on your production needs. Pipelines like Colorfront, ORION-CONVERT, or BBC HLG LUTs will display a watermark over the image until a license is applied. The device offers full 12-bit 4:4:4 up to 4K30 and 10-bit 4:2:2 up to 4K60, plus down conversion. A bypass node is integrated into each pipeline for both 12G-SDI and HDMI 2.0 outputs for quick input/output comparisons. Six image processing pipelines are available: AJA Color, Colorfront, ORION-CONVERT, BBC HLG LUTs, NBCU LUTs, and ACES.
33-Point 3D LUT Processor
The primary 22-point 3D LUT processor uses tetrahedral interpolation for the highest accuracy color conversion. This processor is a requirement for HDR workflows and is very useful for calibration purposes. When set to dynamic, the 3D LUT is fully controllable through third-party software. The processor supports a wide range of file types, including .CLF and .CTF.
1D LUTs
With four 1D LUTs, you can easily manage your color processing pipeline for the best possible image. These LUTs are referred to as "shaper LUTs", which wrap around the 3D LUT. Map perceptually significant values to use more of the 3D LUT transform data set. In the AJA Color Pipeline, 1D LUTs can be set as RBG Color Correctors for color correcting a source between 3D LUT processing.
Advanced Overlay and ANC Metadata Management
Overlay selected metadata and user data on the video for live use, capturing or embedding in the .tiff file for later use, or just passing ANC metadata to the next SDI or application using the ColorBox API via Ethernet. Quickly recall the exact camera settings, pipeline configuration, and other parameters that created the image. User-customized text can overlay any information on an image that needs to be conveyed for review if the camera cannot provide it.
ARRI Wireless Video Optimized Support
The ColorBox supports LogC4 (WVO) video from ARRI ALEXA 35 cameras. This is an intermediate encoding for ALEXA 35 SDI outputs designed to improve monitoring image quality when transmitting wirelessly. The matching ARRI WVO decoding LUT is built into the options in AJA Color, Colorfront, and ACES pipelines.

AJA ColorBox Reviews

Solid Box - Can Pass SDI Out on Boot After Configuration and Saving Preset

Many options for this box. Integrates well and works reliably. To respond to Adria-Dit, the solution to not getting a signal on boot up is to save a preset after you have configured it to work with LiveGrade and set that as the startup preset. Then, it will boot and configure itself for livegrade.

Ugh
