Blackmagic Design Ultimatte 12 Overview

Upgrade your real-time compositing for keying live action video with the Ultimatte 12 8K Keyer/Advanced Compositing Processor from Blackmagic Design. This latest version of the Ultimatte 12 adds 12G-SDI connectivity to advanced algorithms, improved spill suppression, color science and separation, and excellent color fidelity to help create truly photorealistic composites.
The Ultimatte 12 works in 8K, UHD, and HD with sub-pixel processing for an improved image. Designed for news, sports, and other types of production, this versatile unit offers realistic augmented reality layers and one-touch auto-keying. This processor requires the downloadable Ultimatte Software for macOS and Windows, and it can also be controlled via the separately available Ultimatte Smart Remote 4. The 2 RU unit features dual redundant power, and it features a 10GB Ethernet port.
Advanced Real-Time Compositing
Uses new algorithms and color science, improved edge handling, color separation, color fidelity, and spill suppression to create photorealistic composites in 8K, UHD 4K and HD, all in real time. Designed for news, sports, narrative film and television, and entertainment productions using fixed cameras, static backgrounds, or virtual set systems. The ability to layer augmented reality objects enables talent to pre-visualize virtual sets when using a green screen.
Multicamera Use
New technology enables the Ultimatte 12 to add accurate keying parameters to multiple cameras, accounting for slight variations between the camera positions
Realistic Augmented Reality Layer
A new "realistic" layer compositing mode enables you to add translucent or tinted objects on top of the foreground.
One-Touch Keying and Advanced Image Processing
One-touch keying dramatically lessens the time it takes to pull a key, using the auto key to set over 100 parameters once your set is well lit and white balanced. Advanced image processing algorithms and an immense color space are used to generate internal mattes, so different parts of the image can be processed separately based on the colors in each area. This processing produces fine detail on hair and smooths color and object transitions with 8K, UHD 4K, and HD video.
Highest Color Fidelity
Refined flare, edge, and transition processing enables you to remove the background without affecting the colors you want to retain, faithfully reproducing colors that are impossible on other keyers, such as a bright yellow dress in front of a green screen.
Shadows and Transparencies
Improved flare algorithms can remove green tinting and spill from almost anything, creating true, realistic looking virtual environments, even when using shadows or transparent objects with reflections.
High-Quality Interfaces
High-quality connections include an Ethernet port, a GPI tally trigger, 12G-SDI BNC ports that support up to 8K video, and Program video outputs.
Dedicated Compositing Inputs
Dedicated connectors with loop outputs that are used for compositing include:

Inputs:

  • Background
  • Background matte
  • Garbage matte
  • Foreground
  • Holdout matte
  • Layer
  • Layer matte

Output:

  • Program out

Blackmagic Design Ultimatte 12 Reviews

Good Investment

I set up a small, green screen video studio for a friend of mine. We started with a Rodecaster switcher, but needed more “power” for multiple cameras, so we upgraded to the ATEM Mini Extreme ISO G2 switcher. As nice as this switcher is, I was still unhappy with the chromakey results - probably due to our not-so-ideal lighting set-up. I still fought with grainy output, outlines around the talent, and so forth. Someone in a Reddit forum suggested these Ultimatte devices. I balked a bit because we needed one for each camera to make it work. Nevertheless, the price per unit is not bad, and the power…. Well…! Let’s just say, the result is well worth the investment. These things do more than I expected But the best part is, once I set up the shots very carefully, and saved the set, all I do now is power up the system, and all the shots are ready to go - very professional looking; clean, no lines, no fuzz, no goofy hair outlines, etc. These items seem to be hot sellers; I had a difficult time finding 3 of these from the same source. B&H was the only source that could fill the order AND ship to us - quickly.

Giant Step-up From Atem Mini Extreme Keyer

During Covid19 shutdown we turned to Remote Work. However Camlink type External Camera Capture USB devices were nowhere to be found. We were able to get our hands on Atem Mini models and start using those as USB capture devices. Later on, we learn how to use Green Screen on Zoom Calls using our Atem Mini models and for us, that was a game changer. Recently we got our hands on Ultimatte 12 HD Mini Keyer. And what a difference! We thought Atem Mini Keyers are the best. And they are. However Ultimatte 12 units are at a different level, even with mediocre Green Screen setups like we do. One More Thing: Atem Mini models have Frame converter built-in and these units will negotiate any source you plugin into them. We used Laptops, GoPros, Camcorders and even VCRs with Atem without any issue. However Ultimatte units do not have Frame Rate converters built in. So you must make sure all inputs into  Ultimatte have precisely set frame rate. We are using 1080p / 59.94. We bought some MD-HX Decimators to convert our inputs to match precisely what is needed for Ultimatte. We saw some reviewers' bad ratings on the B&H website. Which we believe could be because of User-Error, not the units.
