Portrait-length 56mm focal length is compatible with full-frame format sensors as well as format sensors, where it will provide an mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.6 maximum aperture offers extensive control over selective focus and shallow depth of field, and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions.
The unique singlet-doublet-singlet lens design renders imagery with a soft, smooth, and glowing image quality reminiscent of mid-20th century portrait lenses.
Softness can be controlled by stopping-down the lens: when stopped-down to f/16, the image exhibits a smooth quality with greater central sharpness.
A 1:2 maximum magnification ratio and 5" minimum working distance enable working with close-up subjects.
Silver edition lens features a clear anodized coating, silver-colored metal barrel, and engraved aperture and focus markings.

The Lens That Made Me a Better Photographer

After years of relying heavily on high-end L-series glass, mounting the Lensbaby 56 to my Canon R6 Mark II has been nothing short of a revelation. It hasn't just given me a new creative tool; it has fundamentally made me a better photographer. Here is why this lens has earned a permanent spot in my bag: The Magic of Light and Character This lens doesn't just let in more light than my L-series lenses—the real star of the show is how it handles that light. Every image it produces has a unique character and depth that I simply can't replicate with my standard clinical glass. At lower f-stops, the lens renders a beautifully strong, almost dreamlike effect that transforms ordinary scenes. But don't let the creative effects fool you: when you lock it down to f/5.6 and above, the images tighten right up. They become remarkably sharp and clear, nearing the crispness of my 24-70mm f/2.8, while still retaining that distinct, soulful Lensbaby character. Slowing Down and Stripping Back In an era of incredible camera algorithms and eye-tracking autofocus, the Lensbaby forces you to strip all of that away. Without the automatic tools to lean on, I am forced to slow down and truly consider what I am photographing. The fixed focal length means I have to "zoom with my feet" and understand exactly where I need to be positioned before the camera ever reaches my eye. I’ve restricted myself to using just this lens for street photography, and it is a welcome, rigorous challenge. There are few gizmos to bail me out—just pure, intentional photography. Premium Build and Tactile Focus The physical feel of the lens is perfectly matched to the R6 Mark II. Constructed with an all-metal aluminum alloy barrel, it has a significant, high-quality weight that balances beautifully in the hand. Because you rely entirely on manual focus, the focus ring is critical, and Lensbaby nailed it. It is smooth, perfectly dampened, and highly responsive, allowing for incredibly precise micro-adjustments. The Near-Macro Bonus As if the portrait and street capabilities weren't enough, the lens features a 1:2 magnification ratio and a close focusing distance of just 5 inches. This makes it an incredibly versatile near-macro lens. While you might not be getting microscopic, bug’s-eye close-ups, it is absolutely fantastic for detailed product shots and capturing intimate textures. The Verdict If you are looking to break out of a creative rut or want a lens that actively challenges you to improve your compositional and mechanical skills, I cannot recommend the Lensbaby 56 enough. It is a masterclass in the joy of manual photography.

Manual everything so be prepared, but very versatile. Working with different combinations of aperture and distance from your subject you can create glowing soft portraits (wide aperture) or slightly soft landscapes with just a hint of glow (smaller apertures). Lots of good YouTube videos demonstrate all the uses and help the learning curve. Extremely solidly built.

I want to buy the Nikon F version so I can use it ...

I want to buy the Nikon F version so I can use it on my Nikon Film cameras, then attach the Lens baby to my fujifilm X-t3 with my vello adapter. Will the lens give its best performance on both cameras? The Vello adapter has no glass-it only adjusts the difference between the sensor and the lens. Nikon F cameras have a greater distance between lens mount and film.

This lens seems to be well made, better than some other Lensbaby lenses. It resembles a regular lens, with smooth focusing and a good aperture ring.

I shoot a Nikon F2AS, the last fully mechanical F ...

I shoot a Nikon F2AS, the last fully mechanical F series film camera Nikon made. Since this is a manual lens with an F mount, would it work on this camera? (The camera does have a built-in light meter which obviously would not couple with this lens, but I seldom use that anyway and it is not a consideration for me.)

As the Lensbaby Velvet 56mm f/1.6 Lens for Nikon F is a fully manual lens and has a built-in aperture ring, it would be compatible for use with the Nikon F2AS 35mm film SLR camera.
