Voigtlander 65mm f/2 Macro APO-Lanthar Aspher... Overview

The MACRO APO-LANTHAR 65mm f/2 Aspherical Lens by Voigtlander is an interchangeable lens for full-frame Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras. This is the third lens to bear the APO-LANTHAR name, following the APO-LANTHAR 50mm f/2 Aspherical and APO-LANTHAR 35mm f/2 Aspherical Z-mount lenses. This lens is a high-performance manual focus macro lens. It covers a full-size image circle, and its optical design is optimized for the image sensor of the Nikon Z-series mirrorless cameras.

  • Apochromatic design eliminates chromatic aberrations
  • Designed exclusively for Nikon Z-mount cameras
  • Covers full-frame image circle
  • Data communication with the camera body through electronic contacts
  • Rigid and durable all-metal lens barrel
  • Manual focus for reliable fine focus
  • Floating Lens mechanism
  • Maximum magnification of 1:2 with a minimum focusing distance of 12.2"
  • 10-blade aperture diaphragm for beautiful bokeh
  • Includes dedicated screw-in lens hood
This lens is equipped with electronic contacts, which communicates data between the lens and the body. In addition to relaying Exif information and supporting in-body image stabilization on 3 axes, this lens has three types of focusing support functions: focusing by color changing of the focus point frame, peaking function focusing, and focusing with the enlargement button.
The optical performance of this 8-group, 10-element lens with an aspherical surface on both sides and six elements of abnormal partial-dispersion glass is the best in the history of Voigtländer. In addition to the large bokeh effect, which can be enjoyed with the large maximum f-stop for a macro lens, the lens also exhibits sharp image making performance from the maximum aperture. The floating lens mechanism enables extremely high-quality images of even distant subjects, beginning from a minimum focusing distance of only 0.31m for 1/2x magnification.

Voigtlander 65mm f/2 Macro APO-Lanthar Aspher... Reviews

Very good lens, but beware of absolutely *no* support in case anything goes wrong

Used this lens on many food & portrait photoshoots, it's an absolute rockstar. You already know that. It fell off a table about a couple feet (onto carpet) and managed to put a small dent in the focusing barrel. It still functions, but the focus & aperture ring are incredibly stiff. I contacted Voigtlander directly, as well as at least 5 camera repair shops, and no one will even consider touching this lens. This wouldn't happen if it were Sony, Zeiss, Canon, etc. Awful support for a $1000 lens.

Ideal close-up lens on APS-C

I wrote a love letter to the APO-Lanthar line-up on a review of the 35mm so I won't go over much of what I said there. Summary is that Voigtlander's build quality is probably tied by other manufacturers, not beat, and that the image quality has the character of a vintage lens with the sharpness and contrast of a modern lens. Specifically, the colors out of these lenses I haven't seen elsewhere. There's something about the deepness of really saturated colors and the micro-contrast that makes me swoon. While maintaining a creamy, swirly bokeh? I dunno man, there's a reason photographers talk about these lenses like they're teenagers with a crush. I do mostly solo or guerrilla-style shooting, either verité-style handheld or throughly deliberate tripod shots, and I prefer a well-built manual lens for either, so Voigtlander is ideal for my style. I had 3D-printed gear rings made for these to use with a follow focus for when I can afford an AC, so that's a nice option to have. The macro capabilities of this lens are something I didn't know I needed, and it's made me want to get into the 110mm F2.5 of this lineup because of its 1:1 macro (this is 1:2), but so far this lens has got me as close as I've wanted to get to a subject. Otherwise, it's a shame Voigtlander didn't include the de-clickable feature for this lens. The not-perfectly-rounded bokeh in different apertures isn't that big of a loss, although I do really love that about the 35mm, but I do like being able to change aperture mid-shot. Variable ND makes it work tho, so it's not that big of a deal.
