Minolta MN4K100Z Reviews

Great picture, Poor sound

This camera has a great picture but the audio is curiously poor, worse than the average camcorder. It has input for an external mic but the poor audio circuitry cancels out any possible improvement This is definitely not a camera for musical events. But if you don't need good sound, it has great video features. The instructions take a lot of study to learn some of the operations. For a 4K camcorder, the price is very attractive.

Poor Quality, NOT 4K

First of all, this is not a Minolta Camera. A company called Elite Brands recently purchased the rights to the Minolta name and started putting it on generic cameras. This is one of those. It is NOT 4K. It is 2880x2160 resolution, not 3840x2160. The video files import into Davinci Resolve in a 4x3 format and have to be stretched out. It also looks like it is a poor up-res from maybe 720p. The detail is very poor. Combined with heavy sharpening artifacts and excessive noise reduction and the overall image suffers. The dynamic range is also very poor, resulting in crushed shadows and blown out highlights. This is made worse by what seems like highly boosted image contrast which cannot be changed. The menus and options are very limited. There is no manual focus and no manual exposure controls other than a three stop +/- exposure compensation option. The menus occasionally lag and the touch screen often requires multiple presses for it to recognize it. There is only one zoom speed. The photo button requires only a VERY light touch to activate and if you accidentally touch it while recording it will stop recording. If you touch it while not recording it will switch to photo mode and require you to cycle through the modes to switch back to video mode. This happened to me numerous times in just a short time using the camera. This camera has NO image stabilization and very bad rolling shutter. This makes handheld footage extremely shaky and full of jello effect from the rolling shutter, especially when zoomed in. This camera does have 10X optical zoom and autofocus, but the autofocus is very poor. It hunts badly quite often. Other times it simply refuses to focus or misses focus badly and will not correct. Audio is a single track, mono only, whether using internal audio or the mic jack. It is also recorded at 32KHz and seems to have a limited frequency response. There is a ton of digital noise reduction applied, resulting in an unnatural sound and odd audio artifacts. The mic jack works, but the audio recording levels can not be adjusted and there is no way to even view a meter or anything, so you will have no way of knowing if it's too quiet or clipping and no way to adjusted it. I tried a couple lavalier mics and with a normal speaking voice the audio clips horribly and is unusable. With a powered shotgun mic (Sennheiser MKE 600) at 1 foot away it also clips pretty much 100% of the audio. At two feet away it still clips very bad. With a non-powered shotgun mic (Rode Video Mic Go II) held at arms-length it clips pretty often. Again, there is no way to adjust the audio levels in this camera to prevent this from happening. The internal audio doesn't clip as badly, but it's still single track mono, tons of audio artifacts from the aggressive noise reduction and very tinny sound. Despite claiming to work with up to 128GB memory cards, I got memory errors with any card above 32GB. There is also hot pixel on the sensor that shows up in all videos. This is a poor quality camera with poor performance and false specs.

The audio quality is poor overall. Also, the audio recording levels are not adjustable. With a Rode VideoMic Go II on the camera with the camera held at arms length and talking at a normal speaking volume the audio clips quite a bit. With a lav mic clipped to my shirt it clips horribly bad. With a Sennheiser powered shotgun mic it clips terribly at arms length, and still clips bad two feet away. The frequency response is a bit limited and there is also strong noise reduction at all times that causes odd artifacts. Keep in mind this camera is a generic Chinese camcorder re-branded "Minolta" by a company called Elite Brands who purchased the rights to the Minolta name recently.
