The NOKTON 40mm f/1.2 Aspherical Lens by Voigtlander is a large aperture f/1.2 lens for full-frame Z-mount cameras. NOKTON is the title given to fast lenses with an open f value of f/1.5 or less among Voigtlander lenses. The merit of fast lenses in modern times, where the sensitivity of image sensors has increased, is that the large bokeh at open aperture can be used as a photographic expression. The NOKTON 40mm f/1.2 Aspherical is a large aperture manual focus lens. Covering a full-frame image circle, the optical design is optimized for the image sensor of the Nikon Z system cameras. The lens construction consists of eight elements in six groups, two of which are double-sided aspherical lenses. Despite its compact size, this lens achieves an astonishingly large f/1.2 aperture.

What a wonderful lens!
How did I come to discover it so late?
It must have been the umlaut in the name.

This is a very special lens. First of all, the build quality is second to none. If you haven't tried a Voigtlander, you owe it to yourself to try. Full metal body constructed with high precision. Unprecedented haptic feedback. This lens will outlast you, your kids and your grandkids.
What makes it special is the optical formula. Autofocus lenses face a significant restriction on the movable glass weight, i.e. the elements moved by AF motors, leading to more complex optical designs. An equivalent AF lens would have been much larger and heavier. Meanwhile, this gem is around 300g and it's freaky impressive at f/1.2 at least in the central DX portion of the frame. Even the contrast is fairly high wide open, only marginally improving when this Nokton is stopped down. Meanwhile the out-of-focus rendering is absolutely gorgeous. Not buttery-smooth clinically boring, but not a busy mess either.
On a modern mirrorless body manual focusing is a joy, especially on Nikons with their advanced MF aids (the green box). The 40mm FOV is perfect for walking around. This is now my standard lens for the Nikon Zf.
