Because it is made of so many pieces screwed together and doesn't have a hex hole in the middle, it is difficult to get the screw tight, and even when it is tight, there is still some wiggle. Not for heavy duty use.

Do the anti-twist pins retract if there is no hole for them or are they fixed?

The Niceyrig ARRI-Style Rosette Mount Adapter with 3/8''-16 Screw locating pins are not retractable or removable. They are fixed to the adapter.
