Zoom M2 MicTrak Overview

From Manufacturer

With an all-in-one design and up to 96 kHz / 32-bit floating point stereo recording, the M2 MicTrak from Zoom delivers an ideal portable recording solution, combining two cardioid microphones in X/Y position with a quality, microSD compatible field recorder in one body. Thanks to the convenient built-in, backlit LCD display, mono speaker, and headphone output, you can monitor your recordings in real time, making it easier than ever to record excellent audio on-the-go without sacrificing complete control.

Weighing in at a single pound and sporting high max SPL levels, the M2 is easy to carry to any event or recording environment, and it can also be used as a USB audio interface to record directly to an external computer or digital recording device. The M2 is easy to power, with the ability to run off of two AA batteries, USB-C bus power, or a Zoom AD-17 AC adapter (sold separately).

The Best of Both Worlds
The M2 MicTrak is designed to fuse the professional guts and features of the F-Series recorders with the convenience and portable form factor of the Handy Series. This middle road allows the M2 to provide excellent functionality at an attractive price, while remaining easy to carry to any recording scenario.

  • 32-bit floating point recording provides excellent headroom and helps to avoid clipping issues
  • High max SPL of 135 dB SPL delivers further protection against clipping for loud sound sources, such as performances, crowds, or instruments
  • 11 hours of battery life for improved operating time and multiple power options, including AA battery, USB bus power, or AC adapter (sold separately)
  • Dual AD converter circuits, derived from the F-Series, make manual input gain adjustment unnecessary
  • Support for broadcast- and film-quality BWF wav format as well as iXML for inclusion of location metadata on files or IP audio streams
Wide Applications
The M2 MicTrak is ideal for a wide range of portable sound recording applications from journalism and interviews, to podcasts, streaming, audio for video, and simply field recording or musique concrète. The M2 is small enough to fit in your coat pocket, but powerful enough to handle some of the loudest sounds, and easy to direct towards your sound source with its microphone-style form factor.

Zoom M2 MicTrak Reviews

Pretty Darn Good!

This is a great device for field production, note taking and voice over work. The sound is solid, the GUI is large and very helpful and most of all the device fits in your pocket. It's very easy to use and is very reliable. If this device had the ability to have a LINE IN it would be to good to be true at this price point. As a college professor in the Mass Comm department, I intend to order at least another dozen of these. It's pretty close to perfect.

Goof-proof Audio

For years, when using visual media with separate audio, I used a card-playing deck sized Marantz, relatively expensive at the time, but great sound and lasted years. To my horror I learned that Marantz does not make these anymore. I looked for a while for a replacement. And found this Zoom M2. What I found with the square device I had used for years, was that when I handed it to people for a comment as I snapped photos, they didn’t really know how to hold it. When I came across this “all in one” mic, I thought, well people will know how to hold it. That’s huge. But will it sound tinny and awful? It looks a bit toy-like. But for the price I figured it was worth a try. I’ve only used the Zoom M2 for one event on the mono setting. It’s a confidence builder because it’s kinda oops free. With “floating audio” (whatever that is) there are no levels to set. And the menus, unlike the Marantz, are simple. You just have to make sure you get how it communicates. (The little slashes under the menu is the up and down and enter buttons. Took me a minute to see that.) I hate micro SD cards and especially how it goes into this device. It’s a tray style phone type load. Very precarious. The good news is the mini-usb on the left side works like a charm to off-load the audio. So I’m thinking I’ll just let that micro SD card stay in there forever.  Seems silly but you could overlook a huge screw on the back of the device and send a screwdriver to the bottom and try to pry it open to get to the AA battery compartment. Don’t. The batteries easily releases down once the screw in the middle of the device springs out. It has a “hold” on the side so folks won’t accidentally shut if off while using it. (That’s typical.) It has a spot to plug in headsets to check the audio, but also a very convenient speaker so you can hear if you have something without headsets. Volume control is for monitoring and not audio record input. The usb can allow you to offload to your computer, or switch the simple menu on the device and use it as a VoiceOver mic or maybe for video conference calls. I haven’t tried that yet.  And it comes with a cattail. It looks like Winkie Guard from the Wizard of Oz once you don the hat over its head. Cute.  I did notice that one very base voiced person popped it a bit. So maybe using the cattail always is an idea. But everyone else sounded so good I fear that might muffle the average voiced folks. It’s a little big vertically. Maybe 8.5 inches so I had a little trouble stuffing it in my bag because it’s a long hunk of plastic. But it’s super light so running around it went into my back dungaree pocket no issue as I snapped pictures and pulled it out when I needed it.  Overall, great audio for what I need and most people doing run and gun interviews need. Kinda goof proof. Light. And inexpensive for what you could pay for a similar device.
