What a mixed bag

The motherboard looks fantastic. It feels great. But it has an exhausting amount of let downs. The motherboard should have come with heatsinks for all three M.2 slots. They should have removed the wifi module slot and made the M.2 slot next to it a 22110 size. The slimSAS port doesn't support SAS whatsoever. It operates entirely in SATA mode. I tried hooking up a SAS expander to it and nothing. It only work with sata. The bandwidth between all the sata ports is limited by the chipset. You can only get a max of 2GB/s across all 8 sata ports. When the max should be 4 GB/s. No graphical BIOS. The BIOS also will not show you at all if ECC is recognized on your Ram (AMD BIOS does). You have to query it in your OS to see if it is enabled. There is no way to export your bios settings. Upon updating the bios it forces you to reset to factory default on first boot. The bios instructions also tell you to update the ME firmware. However, the executable they provide can only be run in Windows. This is extremely inconvenient as you're probably going to be using this with Linux. That being said there are some pros: the post code display is very helpful. It posted without issues with a 12500 and Nemix 5600MHz ECC RAM. RAM was verified to be running with ECC enabled with this configuration.

As the RAM is dual-channel, you will get best performance by using matched pairs. As 1x64GB DDR5 DIMMs are only available in registered form at present, and registered memory is meant for servers and incompatible with this motherboard, you will need 4x32GB to have 128GB total. In the future, 64GB and 128GB unregistered DIMMs should become available.

The ASUS Pro WS W680-ACE LGA 1700 ATX Motherboard (B&H # ASPWSW680ACE) is not compatible with the Intel Xeon-E 2488 processor.
