Godox AK-R21 Reviews

Fun, handy light shaper.

It can be a bit tricky to focus without a strong modeling like, but the creative effects you can achieve with the slides make the effort well worth it. Really fun to experiment with for a great price.

Inexpensive addition to kit for more creativity.

Since the one review on this item at the time of this writing is not the best, I felt obligated to chime in. For a photo-centric gobo/projection attachment for less than 150 dollars including the full package of ALL of the godox slides this thing is awesome for certain uses. I'll be clear on what it DOES do and what it is NOT intended to do. 1. This thing IS like a slide projector for your flashes. It projects colored designs or backgrounds onto whatever u point it at. You can focus it or leave it out of focus depending on your creative needs. 2. You COULD use any 35mm slides in this thing. The inserts look to be exactly the same size. It makes me want to go out and buy a film camera and some slide film (note: you NEED slide film which prints in positive colors, not traditional film which will be negative colors - unless of course you want that look of an inverted color image!) 3. You could also print your own transparencies and cut them down to size to fit this thing if you are inclined to do that. 4. Using this projection attachment directly on your subject or in elements of your scene can add cool colors and shapes in a creative way. 5. With a little bit of haze in the air pointed at or above the camera lens, you can make some REALLY sick streaks of colored light. What it is NOT intended to be: By itsself with no insert, it does NOT put out a pleasing circle of light and it is more like a blob of light. Out of the box It is not really a gobo light shaper as the ones from various companies that cost hundreds to over a thousand dollars. You don't use it with blades or an iris to shape a circle of light as you want it. You would NOT use it for a gradient ball of light on your background without the slides in it. That is not to say you couldn't hack this by printing slides on transparency paper of shapes with all black backgrounds, or a gradient ball that fades to black on the edges. That would project like any other slide if you have the means to make the slides. In any case, if you know what you are getting, for this low price, this thing is very cool indeed. The only thing I would have done differently if I were godox, is ship it out with a wider angle lens as the stock lens. I actually used this setup on a professional shoot for my main client yesterday and that was the one thing that bugged me. I'll be ordering a wider one to complement the one that came with it. I hope that helps. I mean you could complain about it, but really what are your alternatives for something in this price range and most importantly SMALL size and LIGHT weight!?..... not much.

Is it possible to create your own slides for this projector? Will 35mm slides work, whether in a mount or not?
Asked by: Webb
Godox does not indicate the size of the slides included in the Godox AK-R21 Projection Attachment for Flash Heads, but they are not standard-sized 35mm slides. That being said, if you do not mind cutting down a standard 35mm slide to the size of the slide holder included in the above kit, then they may work with the Godox AK-R21. Do note it appears you would have to use unmounted slides.
