iOptron SkyHunter Reviews

Works well, poor clutch design.

Bought this to set up a 50mm Ultra wide field rig with my ASIAIR Pro. The mount follows commands very well. Tracking is off a bit in DEC but I think it is a balance issue, I have not done any trouble shooting on this yet. Will hold the sun in the FOV for about 30 minutes before it needs a little nudge back to center. I plan on using this either in a fixed not tracking setup for star trails and timelapse imaging. I have a 30mm guide scope for DSO wide field but have not had clear sky to get things adjusted. The good: Very light weight, Lipo battery will last all night(or can be powered viathe ASIAIR since the battery handles any power surges) Can handle a good amount of weight for its size. Comes complete with counter balance bar and weight. Was easy to set up The Bad: Battery cover kept falling off, Ioptron sent a new one that is working good now. The Clutches. Whi ever design the clutch release knobs for this had to be on drugs. They are hard to grab hold of, and you have to be carefule your scope does not go flying when they are released. Grabbing hold of the counter balance bar does help. Why Ioptron didnt use T handles on them is beyond me.

Not sure how this item passed QA. The battery cover would not stay on and one of the battery wires was cracked. These are signs that not much care has been put into producing this tracker. But the major problem that I have is with tightening the clutches. They are either loose or too tight, the tightening is not gradual. And the knobs are too close together, there is no room to grab them well. The tracking is not great either. I took a timelapse of the sun in solar mode and I could see how the target drifted and the movement was jumpy. I sent it for service to iOptron. They fixed the battery, but not the clutches.

How does it differentiate between alt-az tracking and equatorial tracking modes? Is there a switch? Are red knobs for manual

This base is needed to use the Skyhunter in EQ mode: https://bhpho.to/47Nf3nA . The modes will be displayed on your smart phone or the optional hand controller.
