Nikon NIKKOR Z 85mm f/1.2 S Reviews

If you can only have one…

I bought this lens when it was initially released and ended up selling it for the 70-200 thinking i needed more “versatility…” I quickly realized that it’s irreplaceable, and while the 70-200 is amazing at portraiture and some of the same types/styles of shots, the 85 1.2 is a holy grail lens in the Z mount lineup, and I bought another copy to go along with the telephoto. The price is staggering. The weight and dimensions are substantial. The effortless magic this lens produces makes all of it worthwhile. It rarely leaves my Z8 now and has become my everyday, all around, shoot anything, do anything lens. Now, if Nikon ever makes a 28-70 F2, that and the 85 1.2 would be all I’d ever want and/or need… Maybe.

Lovely lens

I have reviews in on the f/1.8 trio as well as the other 2 f/1.2 lenses. I own all 6. Short version - this is a beautiful and amazing lens - just as it should be at this price point. It is also a bag of rocks worth of weight and makes for a nose heavy camera to an extreme. The only drawback beside the size is that I cannot personally distinguish a winner when looking at images shot side by side using this and the 85mm f/1.8 S. That isn't a knock on this lens. It is extremely high praise for the f/1.8. I will use this lens because I bought it - but I expect the f/1.8 S is going to be in my bag more often and this will be relegated to more local fare. Unless you have some pressing need for razor thin depth of field (which is not where I use these lenses when in the studio) and one extra stop of light in situations where bumping the ISO is somehow going to kill the image - save yourself a lot of money. No doubt this is a 5 star lens. The issue is simply that the f/1.8 S is as well - but at a fraction of the size and weight. Kudos to Nikon on both.

What is diameter of the lens with the lens hood mounted in the storage position. Need to buy lens case?
Asked by: Karl
While Nikon lists sizes approximately, caliper measurements of the new hood (HB-106) external diameters I find are: front (widest) = 4.75" and this tapers to 4.65" at the attachment end before the attachment itself. So when mounted reversed in the storage position, you have the 4.65" diameter out at the far end. Also, with front and rear caps attached, and the hood mounted in reverse for storage, plus my usual UV filter (which adds 3.75mm or 0.15"), the overall length measures closer to 6.50". I would account for the caps, etc., in storage containers.
