TRITON AUDIO FetHead Germanium Balanced XLR Microphone Preamp
Key Features
  • Distinctly Vintage-Flavored Preamp
  • For Dynamic and Ribbon Microphones
  • Fixed 29 dB Gain Boost
  • Germanium Transistor for Big Sound
The FetHead Germanium from Triton Audio is an in-line preamp with a germanium transistor that adds 29 dB of gain to your ribbon or dynamic mic signal before it hits the preamp or mixing desk. Use of the germanium element colors the signal with a distinctly larger-than-life vintage sound, making this FetHead model well suited for use with neutral or transparent-sounding preamps and consoles. The additional gain allows you to drive longer cable runs and provides higher-quality audio with a better signal-to-noise ratio.

TRITON AUDIO FetHead Germanium Overview

The FetHead Germanium from Triton Audio is an in-line preamp with a germanium transistor that adds 29 dB of gain to your ribbon or dynamic mic signal before it hits the preamp or mixing desk. Use of the germanium element colors the signal with a distinctly larger-than-life vintage sound, making this FetHead model well suited for use with neutral or transparent-sounding preamps and consoles. The additional gain allows you to drive longer cable runs and provides higher-quality audio with a better signal-to-noise ratio.

Germanium Flavor
Germanium transistors were widely used in the earliest transistor designs by Neve, EMI, Telefunken, and Fairchild, and have developed a reputation for a decidedly vintage mojo that remains sought-after today.

For this preamp, Triton created a novel hybrid circuit that consists of low-noise JFETs and a hand-selected new-old-stock (NOS) germanium transistor to take full advantage of the distinctive germanium sound and at the same time achieve the same sonic quality for which Triton is known. A low-impedance output buffer provides output drive to long cables.

Easy Operation
Your FetHead Germanium will latch straight onto any XLR-equipped microphone, or anywhere else in the signal path between microphone and preamp/mixer. The electronics are housed in a robust metal chassis with a balanced female XLR input and a balanced male XLR output—rugged enough for use at home, in the studio, or on tour.
Protects the Microphone
Some older ribbon microphones do not tolerate phantom power. FetHead uses phantom power to power its circuitry, but doesn't pass phantom power to the microphone, so rest assured your ribbon mics are safe.

TRITON AUDIO FetHead Germanium Reviews

Do their job well

Purchased as a preamp for Cole lip mics which sounded really noisy with cheap a cheap preamp stage on a Behringer X32. These boosted the signal to a level that the X32 seemed a lot happier with. Not sure about the benefits of the Germanium version versus the standard as have not done a head to head.
