Popular among professional audio engineers, the matte gray Schoeps Colette CMC 6 Microphone Amplifier and MK 2XS Omni Capsule Set is a Colette-Series modular microphone bundle that includes the classic CMC 6 (XLR output) microphone amplifier, MK 2XS omnidirectional mic capsule, SG 20 stand mount with swivel, B 5 solid-foam popscreen, and a premium case for secure transport and storage.
The MK 2XS capsule's considerable, high-frequency-response elevation above 3 kHz (at 0°) compensates for high-frequency-response losses and delivers a flat frequency response in the diffuse sound field. If used near a sound source, the sound is brilliant. The MK 2XS is usually used as a room microphone beyond the reverberation radius in larger rooms.
The CMC 6 preamplifier features Class-A, transformerless electronics, resulting in a low noise floor and light weight. The high-impedance input signal of the modular capsules is accurately converted to low-impedance energy, allowing for long cable runs without noise and radio-frequency interference.
The Schoeps CMC6-U is a balanced output stage and +12 to +48V phantom power supply for the Schoeps Colette series modular capsules. The transformer-less output stage ensures low-noise and pristine audio reproduction throughout. The CMC6-U is terminated with a standard balanced 3-pin XLR connection for use with standard microphone inputs and preamplifiers.
The MK 2XS is designed for placement in a diffuse sound field, i.e. at distances in reverberant environments where the greater portion of arriving sound has already been reflected from various room surfaces. In such placement the integrated frequency response of this capsule is essentially flat; the on-axis high-frequency response elevation shown in the graph below is not heard as such. It is remarkable how well-focused a recording can be made with omnidirectional microphones at such distances, when the microphones have been designed and placed appropriately. If this type of microphone is used close to the sound source, the emphasis of high frequencies for on-axis sound incidence would become clearly audible, producing an overly brilliant sonic impression. If miking distances more typical of the mono and early stereo era are to be used, a capsule such as the MK 2XS, with its full diffuse-field equalization, may well offer the optimal balance of focus, depth and spaciousness.
- Omnidirectional pattern
- Diffuse-field capsule
- For miking distances at which the predominant sound is no longer direct
- Useful for relatively distant placement in reverberant environments
This gray Solid Foam Teardrop Popscreen from Schoeps is an acoustic foam close-speech popscreen intended for use with Schoeps Colette Series microphones, but compatible with other microphone capsules as well. It provides sufficient protection at normal speaking distances for cardioids and other directional capsules, especially when speech capsules are used. With omnidirectional capsules, it may even be used outdoors in light wind. This popscreen has minimal effect on sound quality.
