Synology DS1823XS+ External HDD/SDD Overview

Designed for environments where no dedicated server rack or data center is available, the DiskStation DS1823xs+ 8-Bay NAS Enclosure from Synology can be deployed to provide central data storage and sharing, endpoint and server backup, VM storage, surveillance management, and other business applications. Powered by Synology's DiskStation Manager (DSM), the DS1823xs+ can be expanded with 10 additional drive bays, or use the PCIe 3.0 x8/x4 slot to install a 1/10/25GbE networking card or Fiber Channel expansion card.

The DS1823xs+ is equipped with a 3.35 GHz AMD Ryzen V1780B Quad-Core processor and 8GB of DDR4 ECC memory that can be expanded up to 32GB, while also delivering read speeds of 3100 MB/s and write speeds of 2600 MB/s. This NAS is equipped with 8 drive bays that natively support 3.5" SATA hard drives, as well as 2.5" SATA hard drives and SSDs for data storage.

The DS1823xs+ runs on the Synology DiskStation Manager (DSM) OS, which is a browser-based operating system that helps to simplify managing your Synology NAS. Also featured are three USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports for peripherals and accessories, plus two eSATA expansion ports for two DX517 expansion units. Network connectivity is achieved via the one 10 Gigabit Ethernet port or three Gigabit Ethernet ports. For those who require RAID support, the DS1823xs+ supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, and 10, as well Synology F1 and Basic, each of which offers performance, data redundancy, or a combination of both. For those who do not require a RAID, JBOD is also available, allowing each drive bay to be individually utilized.

The DS1823xs+ is engineered to be energy efficient. Not only does it offer two 120 x 120 x 25mm fans to help keep the system running cool, its noise-dampening design makes for quiet operation. The server supports numerous scheduled power on / off cycles and hard drive hibernation to further minimize power consumption and operation expenses.

The Synology DiskStation DS1823xs+ 8-Bay NAS Enclosure operates on 100-240 VAC at 50/60 Hz and includes an accessory pack, an AC power cord, and two RJ45 LAN cables. Protection is provided by a limited 5-year warranty.

Synology DS1823XS+ External HDD/SDD Reviews

Don't Buy it If you Want to use 3rd Party Drives

Purchased the 1823XS+ because their calculator said that this was the model for the number of cameras I needed, but you can't install anything other than Synology drives in this model or it complains all day long, that is not the case with our other Synology NAS devices that have been running for years. I'm not buying their over priced drives that are just a rebranded 3rd party drive anyway. They say the firmware is different, but that does not appear to be accurate looking at the firmware on the few drives I purchased. Just their label and twice the price. Synology support is all but useless when you need help. They say nice things to you but never solve the problem or know the answer even though their website says the NAS will do it. For example you can sync with a windows domain, you can sync with a workstation but you can't sync files with a Windows Server without 3rd part software. Enterprise solution... no I don't think so. Don't waste your time with the XS models.

Easy, fast NAS solution

I bought the 1823 to replace a custom ZFS on Linux NAS server that died (no data loss, fortunately). Synology DSM is a breeze. It works with all the Windows machines in my house without a fuss, user management is very easy, and it has a nice management GUI. It supports Tailscale and Docker out of the box, and accepted my Lets Encrypt cert without issue. 1823 hardware is solid and installing disks is very easy. I shoved 5 Samsung EVOs into this thing and my wife commented how fast it is. It handles sustained writes at 85MB/s on encrypted volumes. My biggest complaint is setting up encryption. There are no explanations of what encryption algorithms are used, or how it works, or whether your master key is stored in a TPM, or how key rotation is manged. Recovery keys are auto-downloaded to your desktop when you setup encryption (there is no other way to get them). The unit self-decrypts after reboot so the key is clearly stored in persistent storage *somewhere*. It's not clear whether the Windows file share (SMB) is encrypted in transit, or what cert it uses, etc. Storage key material is all over the place, and transit encryption is not enforced. They tried to make encryption user-friendly by hiding the details but they made it not very trustworthy in the process. As far as storage, features, and data access goes, the 1823 is working great. I wish I had confidence in the encryption, though.

Does the DS1823XS+ work with IronWolf 20tb drives?
Asked by: Martin
Wow!! I am glad i stayed with the older DSM. I had drives that were on their list and when they started having issues they told me it was only validated with a certain version of drive firmware. CC51 and my drives had CC54. They wouldnt even supply me with their validated version. Fortunately being a storage engineer I was able to contact the drive manufacturer get the firmware and force burn it on the drives. Most of the issues I have seen are sleep times and head parking times making drives fall out of a raid set. Every drive I have ever put into these things has worked (except for the CC51 which was 4TB drives a loooong time ago). I have had 4 versions of the 8 drive bays. They are over priced but dsm is slick when they arent stripoing features away with the new versions.
