RODE M5 Reviews

Performs virtually identical to the $800/pair Shure SM81

I handle A/V for a church that has a 30-member choir. Recently, with the encouragement of our music director, I ran a blind A/B test of a pair of borrowed Shure SM81 mics against the Rode M5. Both pairs were set up on stands with booms and placed right next to each other. We tested by first matching the output volumes of both pairs (the Rodes are about 3db louder), then muting one pair and simultaneously making the other pair hot. Music director and I took turns at the A&H board and standing in the hall. Neither of us could detect any difference whatsoever between the Shures and the Rodes. But our church's front office "detected" the $600 savings!!

The Rode M5 mics come with a foam windscreen. The recommended dead cat for the Rode M5 is the Rode WS8 (BH #ROWS8).

question

Can these mics be used for dialogue (indoor) in a low budget film?
Asked by: rayvonn b.
I haven't used these pics for dialogue, however, I did use them to record a performance on my Yamaha grand piano and found them to be very accurate and warm. As such, I feel they would work very well for dialogue.
