BOSS Gigcaster 8 Reviews

Upgrade to 32 bit float in my Studio

With all my associates recommending 32 bit float I looked into my options. I have always been frustrated by the limitations of field recorders and my 10+ year old dial based mixer. The Gigcaster 8 is a studio device, it is not a field recorder. But most all of my work is studio productions, either in my own studio or on location where I build a stage. So this looked like the end to the frustrations I had to endure with field recorders. After several months of use, I highly recommend the Gigcaster 8. If this is your first encounter with a studio mixer be prepared to spend a substantial amount of time leaning what it can do and how to operate it. The manuals are excellent, all 130 pages. LOL. The most important page turned out to be 37, Restoring the Factory Default Setting. There are so many adjustment you can make that when you realize something you have done across the 8 channels is making them inconsistent with each other, just reset and resume. You get 4 XLR/TRS inputs, plus USB, Mobile and BlueTooth inputs. The 8th channel is onboard sound effects. I now use the XLR inputs to test mic volume levels by creating side by side tests and adjusting the gain to equalize the volume. This is when I learned that mucking around with the vast array of settings will affect output volumes. Now that I am back to factory defaults, side by side testing of mic pairs quickly discovers good and bad pairs of mics. This is important because the 8 track 32 bit recordings to a micro SD card can be either raw or have the setting burnt in. Yep, 8 track 32 bit recordings. You will need to have a good understanding of audio in your NLE system. A set of TRS to XLR cables is needed if you feed the output to an XLR splitter. I feed stereo audio to all of the cameras in the studio via XLR making this cable necessary. Event productions involving speakers are what this kind of device is built for and the touch screen display gives me a better understanding of what is being output from each input to the stereo mix. It is unlikely I will ever use a field recorder again. I was quickly spoiled. We have briefly tested the Rode Go II receiver to the mobile jack. It worked. To control the volume of each channel, a mini to dual XLR splitter cable is requred into two of the four XLR inputs. I can see two Rode Go Pros attached in the near future and analog wireless being phased out of my workflow. I don't podcast so I have not deeply ventured into those features. They are built in. Including level controls for 4 headphones and options for feeding the talkback from different mics. It is more than I am likely to use in the near future, but it is in the manual.

Dysfunctional out of the box

I just purchased a pair of Sennheiser MKE 600 mics. When setting them up in the studio on channels 3 and 4 I realized I had a 15 db gain difference between the two channels to get the audio levels equal. I thought is was the mics and did additional testing before requesting a replacement. Testing created equal conditions for both mics. I exchanged mics on short cables, exchanged cables, used the same cable, etc. Every possible combination was tested. The result was that channel 4 requires 15 db more gain applied to make the output equal to channel 3. This means the board is functionally useless. Further testing showed that on channels 1-4 applying equal gain the mic meters showed about equal for each channel. However, when using the mixer sliders the output volumes were not the same when the sliders were set to the same levels. Conclusion, the mic inputs are equal across channels, the outputs are not. Good news, the mics can be hooked directly to the cameras and deliver consistent recordings. However, putting the Gigcaster8 into the system creates unpredictable results. My recomendation if you have one if these is to do deep testing before you take it on a production. Unfortunately I did not do this testing within the return window and I am stuck with a disfunctional piece of gear. The service request with Roland was just entered. Stay tuned for the resolution.
