Shimoda Designs X40 V2 Overview

The yellow Action X40 V2 Backpack from Shimoda Designs has a 40L capacity and offers photographers a compact, durable carry solution that allows fast access to gear. Two padded sleeves hold and protect laptops or tablets up to 16". The roll top access allows you to expand or compress the volume depending on your needs. There are multiple attachment straps including TPU compression straps for increased durability when attaching bulky items such as skis. The removable helmet holder secures a bike or ski helmet to the exterior of your pack.

The pack's interchangeable and adjustable shoulder straps feature two zippered pockets to carry the latest pro-sized smartphone, a water bottle, or personal accessories. The removable waist belt offers stability and weight distribution when carrying heavy loads and the trolley sleeve attaches to your rolling luggage handle for seamless travel. Two removable pouches hold a tripod or water bottle and can be moved to the waist belt for instant access or removed completely. A hidden sleeve is designed to hold an AirTag so you can locate your pack if it gets lost or stolen.

Expandable Roll Top
The roll top expands to add an additional capacity of 7L if you need it. The top also has a YKK SplashGuard zipper for quick and easy access to your gear.
Adjustable Torso Height
The X40 has three height options with approximately 3" of vertical adjustment. The pack adjusts to provide a custom fit for short, medium and tall torso heights.
Dual Laptop/Tablet Sleeves
Dedicated sleeves are padded and accommodate a 16" laptop plus a tablet.
Hidden Sleeve for Tracking Device
A hidden sleeve holds an AirTag or Tile Pro tracking device so you can locate your pack if it gets lost or stolen.

I got this for my Canon EOS R7 with Canon RF 200–800mm f/6.3–9 IS USM lens. I wanted to be able to store the camera with lens & lens hood attached. The backpack is precisely the size needed for this, with access from the top of the bag. Super quick to get the gear in and out. I only need to open the back of the pack if I'm disassembling or reassembling the camera. Note I purchased the Shimoda Designs XL40 RST Core Unit for DSLR Cameras to insert in the pack and changed the layout to suit my gear. Why not 5 stars? I'd like to see easy-to-find documentation for the backpack (and core unit) to make best use of the equipment. Currently I can only find various YouTube videos on certain aspects. This needs to be consolidated into a manual!

The biggest reason that I chose the Shimoda Action X40 was because of the adjustable shoulder straps. I have a longer torso and other similar backpacks that I have tried just don't fit right. This one is really comfortable on the large setting, and has a well thought out design. I love the options that are available such as the two bottle holders that can be tucked in and zipped away when not needed and the removable waist belt. The phone pouch also actually fits my phone and keeps it accessible. Time will tell but I feel like this will become my go-to pack for adventures.

The Shimoda Designs Action X40 V2 Backpack (Yellow, 40L) is not large enough for both the Shimoda Designs Large Core Unit for Mirrorless Camera and the Shimoda Designs Core Unit Case for DJI Pro Drone.

What insert fits a canon r3 with 10-300mm attached? The large does not fit this setup.

To fit the Canon R3 camera with the 100-300mm f2.8 lens in the Shimoda Designs Action X40 V2 Backpack (40L) you would need the Shimoda Designs XL40 RST Core Unit for DSLR Cameras: (BH #SHCUDXL40RST • MFR #520-454).

The Shimoda Designs Action X40 V2 Backpack 40L packs can fit all core units except the DV series; they are best to pair with the DSLR cores. All Small (B&H # SHCUSPN), Medium (B&H # SHCUMDSLRV2P), and Large DSLR (B&H # SHDSLRV3) cores fit in the 40L.

This listing for the Shimoda Designs Action X40 V2 Backpack (BH #SHV2AX40Y) only includes the backpack. A core unit can be purchased separately and used. The Shimoda Designs Action X40 V2 Starter Kit (BH #SHV2AX40SB) comes with a Medium DSLR Core Unit.

The smallest Shimoda pack that will fit a 600mm 4.0 lens is the X70. The standard XL DV Core Unit will fit the lens unattached to a body, and the XXL DV Core Unit will fit it attached to a body.

Will this pack still be considered carry on? I know Explore 35 v2 is, so could this be as well?

While you will want to double check with the airline you are flying with, the standard carry-on size is 22 x 14 x 9". At 20.9 x 11.8 x 7.9" the Shimoda Designs Action X40 V2 Starter Kit (Black, 40L) is within standard carry-on limits.
